View Full Version : Soft Steel Rivets?

I am fabricating (re-fabricating to be exact) a number of my flap and aileron hangers for my stretched pacer project (waiting on wing parts from Dakota so I might as well ...). In reviewing the piper drawing I see that the two rivets which hold the hinge bearing in place (the aluminum block on the end) are specified as being 1/8 soft steel rivets. I have looked everywhere I can think of and cant find them. Spruce only sells hard aluminum rivets and I am not sure those will work in this application. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Brad

As an aside, I built a jig to fabricate both the aileron and flap hinges and can post a picture if anybody wants to copy it (I have to figure out how to compress pictures first though). Its pretty simple but sometimes its nice to see what others have done. I threw it together last night so Im sure someone could improve on the design anyway.

Brad, The rivets are AN435-4C16 and available from Univair and priced by the ounce if I remember correctly. Would love to see your jig. Here is a thread on minimizing picture size. viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4 (http://www.shortwingpipers.org/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4) I downloaded the Microsoft program and save a copy of the picture in a small or med size for posting. http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downl ... ybeta.aspx (http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/synctoybeta.aspx)

Steve,

Thanks as always for the info. Here are two pics of the jig I put together. It is mostly a drilling jig but I did use it to set the angle where the hanger attaches to the fuselage. I have to admit that I slapped this together pretty quickly and it could have been done better (especially if someone wanted to do a bunch of them). This particular jig is for both the flap and aileron hinges. One pic shows a cull flap hanger to see how it works. I just made a full set of new flap and aileron hangers using this jig and it worked well and the hangers seem to math (from a geometric perspective) all my original pipers. I did build a different jig for bending the flap hangers but it is very similar to this jig but without the mounting points for the hinge block.

I love it, nice and simple. I take it you are using Pacer flap hinges and false spars vs. Super Cub?

Steve,

You are correct, I am using pacer flap hinges and false spars on my wings. Not sure what if any aerodynamic effect that will have on the flaps. That being said, the flaps are eight feet long on these wings so hopefully I will get some good out of them.
