I am the new owner of a PA-22/20 160 HP. The airplane is airworthy, just passed annual and pre-purchase inspection. It is no beauty queen but flies nice. The fabric is Ceconite with dope and has been blessed by two A&Ps. The fabric is 36 years old. The paint is a bit of a mess with fading, cracks, and those little swirly things.

Plan A was:
Buy plane, put in garage, strip, recover paint.
I was dissuaded from this with the logic, why shelve it before you have a chance to fly it? Fly it till the weather turns and then Plan A.

Plan B is:
Fly airplane till weather turns but DO NOT RECOVER. I have talked to guys who know how long it takes to recover and given my circumstances (day job, other job, two kids, marriage I would like to keep) it would be foolish to strip it. Put it in the garage and sand-rejuvenate and repaint. Fix the panel, straighten the sheet metal, add gear fairings and wheel pants, etc etc. And hopefully be flying in two years(ish).

I REALLY like plan B as recovering is too much for me to bite off. I am NERVOUS about what is under the fabric but am will to climb all through this thing to inspect as fully as I can. I can pull fabric away from windows door frames etc. What I can't do is see inside the wings.

Opinions?

Around 3.5 hours after an oil change, the oil pressure will drop a few psi and oil temperature will go up by about 10 degrees. It happens over about 5 or 10 minutes. Previous to the change, everything is stable, and I can't think of anything that would cause it. The only thing consistent is that it only ever happens like that after an oil change. It's almost as if some characteristic of the oil has changed.
Any thoughts, anyone?
PA22/20-160 which I always run just under 75%. I normally use Shell W-100 which is an ashless dispersant type, though I've seen the event occur using Castrol straight mineral 100 (red band), and Mobil (Exxon) 100AD.

Hi All, I'm a new guy to the forum, new '56 Tripacer Owner (40 year old dream) with a new guy mistake. I put Non Ox 91 Octane autogas from a non-proven station in my trusty little bird without filtering it. Didn't detect contaminants until after the first flight hour. Now both tanks show particles. (nothing in the lower strainers) 2 questions: 1. Is there a faster way to drain the tanks, other than the under-wing drains? 2. After I drain the gas, is there something else I should do? Flush the tanks, Sta-bil, Seafoam? Remove the strainer bowls (outside the tanks) I don't suppose there are shutoffs to isolate the strainers? Take it to my field's mechanic? Or simply put clean 100 LL, monitor and call it good? Thanks in advance...I love reading and trying to soak in the wisdom....

I had to buy one on ebay after misplacing my original one for restoration. I thought it it had clamps on both ends....The one I purchased has the clamp only on one end.

Hi everyone,

Just signed up on the SWPO website today, lots of great stuff! I am in the research and planning phase for hopefully starting a Wag Aero Wagabond Traveler soon but have questions regarding the wing construction. First off the plans call for wood ribs/spars whereas the Vagabond (from what I can tell) is aluminum/aluminum. Is the aluminum wing stronger or just more efficient to manufacture on an assembly line? When did Piper switch manufacturing methods?

Also the Wag plans show 11 ribs...from what I've read the SW Pipers have 12 ribs, 13 on the later tri-Pacers. Why only 11 on the Wag? Is the rib spacing different, are the wingtips different, allowing an additional rib?

If I am wrong on any of my conclusions with please let me know, and thank you all for the information and a great forum! I look forward to learning more!!

The closest feeling I can compare it to is coming home from sea after a long deployment. Anticipation, nervousness, and time seems to be ticking by VERY slowly.

One thing I do know for sure. If I was impressed with the planes performance before I ought to be floored now!

My son is attending an orchestra camp this summer and it's a 5+ hour drive one-way. He has to be there on a Wednesday so it would have to be a drive-drop-return trip in the car. I'm really not looking forward to it.

There's an airport (FFX) nearby so it got me thinking of flying him up in the pacer. It's a 5 hour round trip flight vs. 10+ hours of driving. However, the big problem (literally) is he plays and needs to bring his 3/4 string bass:

I've not measured it yet but it's about 6ft tall. It's not very heavy but simply bulky.

Any guesses if it would fit in the back if I were to remove the backseat? Also, not sure if it would load thru the baggage door.

I don't think it would do well strapped to the strut either.:icon_rolleyes:
