Started on the valve seats today....the new way adjustable valve guide pilots for the grinding stone tool holder work quite well. Two cylinders done. Power is still out in town...so no air compressor for the sand blast cabinet. Second shop to tackle the fuel injection pump for the 3304 Cat fixed one of two problems...engine runs great now but.......it’ll still makes oil....turns 5 gallons of oil into 7 gallons in less than one hour.

Fuel pump drive seal bypassing pressure fuel into crankcase. Or am I stating the obvious. Mount gasket has an extra hole?

Hopefully you are correct. NC Machinery rebuilt the injection pump....first part number on the invoice is the lift pump/piston pump using the same check valves as a diaphragm lift pump like you’d find on an old Chevy gas pot. Turns out the mechanic didn’t replace it...but I was billed for it. Ordering gaskets and that pump this morning. Hopefully Gold Streak to Bethel or Pen Pack to Dillingham and will have the genset going this afternoon.

Update... cylinders be done... they need a bath and assembly. Discovered a few problems that warranted complete engine disassembly.
The attached pictures show more than a few problems....like “O” rings on the case dowel pins. Main bearings show the sealant used between the case halves created excess main bearing clearance. And we’re replacing the crankshaft due to deep scoring of the front main journal.

What was the issue with the o'rings on the thru-studs?

continental red silicone on the case halves and all o’rings. Good 10 thou thick.... did you notice the wear pattern on the main bearings?

Re: Lycoming parallel valve guide pilots
I couldn't tell it was silicone nor that it was applied to the o'rings. I now see the bearings. Never ceases to amaze me the things that ignorant people do.

Yeah well....the guy who built it....is an A&P A/I. I like him...this whole thing has been a disappointment.

Re: Lycoming parallel valve guide pilots
It has been done way too many times. Ftank Sparandeo did the same thing. The overhaul manual tells exactly how to do it if people will read it. Just like the Piper Inspection Checklist puts you onto most issues with Short Wing Piper's as well.
