187 510 "Rubber Moulding" (AKA NX502B-52)
Friends:
I've searched the forum and also the "Google" world for this rubber molding (moulding). This is part of the "13136-00 baffle assembly, air bottom cowl". This baffle assembly attaches below the carb air box (at the rear of the "big cowl scoop"). I have the baffle in place but I don't have the rubber moulding on the top and bottom as depicted in the parts catalog.
The catalog shows the Piper part number (of the rubber) as "187 510" and it has a note "NX502B-52". The Piper part number is a bust in all of the searches I've tried but the NX502B-52 apparently is a "Bridgeport Fabricators" part number. While it was easy to find this cross-reference, it has not been easy to find somewhere to buy this rubber.
For those that are confused by my post thus far, the attached snapshot (parts book) shows the baffle assembly and rubber mouldings (16, 17).
What have other Tri-Pacer owners done for a solution?

Re: 187 510 "Rubber Moulding" (AKA NX502B-52)
Hi Todd, from memory I would describe it as a " cloth like " material with reinforcement. I think anything would work
if you can't find it, as long as it tries to seal, and directs airflow. Sorry I can't help more, Moe

Thanks Moe. I've kicked around a few ideas (some of them merit-worthy -- silicone hose, some of them ridiculous -- pool noodle). Since there's no A&P certificate in my wallet, I was hoping to find the "right stuff". If that doesn't work out, I can "leave it as-is without moulding" or "talk to my A&P about what he might authorize as a replacement". I'm guessing that this moulding has been missing for years.
Best regards,
Todd

Hi Todd, maybe give Univair a call. They have good PA22 support and may recommend something they have on the shelves. Side note - how long have you been in kALO area? I went to Hawkeyes Tech 1975/1977 for my A&P ticket.

Hi Moe. I came here in 1999 to work for Deere in Engine Engineering. My uncle lived in Waterloo throughout my childhood (until his death in the late 1970s). Unfortunately Hawkeye has closed their aviation program (even though they still have a paved runway on campus -- now closed too). Supposedly they thought the money spent in the avaition program would attract more students if it was spent elsewhere (other programs). It's a real shame. I'd love to take a few classes -- especially a piston engine class.
Best regards,
Todd

Todd,
What about using this cloth type baffle seal from aircraft spruce?

Re: 187 510 "Rubber Moulding" (AKA NX502B-52)
I just got off the phone with Univair. They actually stock "NX 502B-52" but it is not on their website. $2.03 per foot. Incrementally, I asked about the felt weatherstripping that goes on the U13137-000 "air box scoop". They sell a bulk 3/8" x 1.5" x 6' felt roll for $14.28 that would get cut down (in width) to fit the scoop flanges (sold as "felt-3/8"). Thats somewhat useful information since the parts book does not identify the air scoop felt whatsoever.
Here's a link to the parts I'm talking about for those of you who might have been picturing all of this:
http://www.univair.com/piper/parts/u...coop-assembly/
http://www.univair.com/piper/parts/u...ffle-assembly/
Buying the moulding and felt is a heck of a lot better than buying these assemblies "complete" for $160 each.
I need to check my air scoop -- I'm not sure the leather baffle (seals around the nose gear) is on it.
Further question while we are at it. The parts book calls for "fiber washers" around the cowl attach screws. Univair U85012-047 ($0.60 each).
http://www.univair.com/piper/piper-p...-piper-washer/
Is there a normal "off the shelf" washer that would be acceptable? There are no washers whatsoever on my cowl (except where a couple of the holes have worn oversized). I can suck it up and pay for the Univair washers but I'm guessing that there might be nearly 50 screws on the plane that need them?
Thanks for your help.

Go to a shoe repair shop, buy some black shoe leather, purchase some punches at Harbor Freight , get piece of hard wood, a hammer, and you can punch out all the washers you will ever need.

The "fiber washers" are leather? Punching my own seems like a good way to diddle-away a lazy evening.

Todd,
Another alternative to the fiber washer is a black nylon washer. Virtually any size you want.
