Ok, so if I had a dark blue stripe, the method I used wouldn't work out so well. Makes sense, thanks.

I painted both of my airplanes white first and then the final color. As Brian said it increases the color saturation.

I had the fuselage of my KitFox painted when I went to OSH in 93 and saw an airplane painted the same Aerothane color but it was wow! Much brighter. The owner told me he painted all white first. I came home and repainted my fuselage white and the shot the color over it. It made a bid difference.

Did the same with the Clipper.

I use only Randolph dopes for my colours, and now spray white first as a standard procedure before any colours. Get much better depth of colour that way.

Another shot story just to add...

Dad re covered our Pacers fuselage back in about 1983... at the same time he did a friend of ours Taylorcraft and both decided to use Lemon Yellow Poly Tone on both airplanes... Dad's was stripes over White base and the T-cart was overall yellow over Poly spray silver... at the time we could still get 5 gallon buckets of the stuff so he used the same paint from the one bucket on both airplanes... after they were done you would have thought that the two yellows were completely different colors... the T cart was darker and more subdued and our Pacer is lighter and a bit brighter color....

A lot of custom car paint jobs really depend on the base coat-clear coat systems and you can get all sorts of crazy effects with what color base is sprayed on...

Saw two Chiefs with original paint schemes at Sun & Fun several years ago done by tworking guys who worked on them together. One used white over the silver one without. Same result as posted above.

Duly noted. Reading the stories I vaguely remember being told to lay the white down for said reasons. But my tailfeathers had been painted orange directly onto silver and I wanted the fuse stripes to match.

    Default Andy's Pacer restoration thread...

So, wings did not happen... did get some little "behind the panel" stuff done... takeing a 4 day weekend to try and get some house work/repairs done...

Front and baggage door on... need to paint the rear door hinges before it goes back on...

Put in the rudder return springs...

Behind the panel work... vacuum system, pitot / static lines, oil pressure line, primer lines, coax cables all hooked up... need to do manifold pressure and magneto switch cables... then the boot cowl can go back on for good...

Some of the reasons for not doing more...

    New pavement out front...

Fixed some slight storm damage to our small hanger..

From the inside of the building...

Brian - have a look at the awesome number of views you have got on this post.

Must be some sort of a record and a measure of the interest in your restoration. Andy is going to get a real cream puff!

Getting closer to putting wings on..

Everything hooked up behind the panel..

Boot cowl going on... Note that this is where the red stripe starts...

    Fuel system is done...

Oil lines to cooler made and installed

Rear door finished and set in place...

Will hopefully get the wings on next week... have some scheduled annuals to do and need to re-arrange the shop first..

    Default Andy's Pacer restoration thread...

I'm not sure much of anything is going to get done next week.....

Sis-in-law is in the hospital... The Cancer has took over, her body is shutting down.... She has days, if maybe just hours left....It is unbearable to see how much pain she is in... She was begging the doctors to give her something to end it... I have her two youngest with me while the wife and other sisters are with her...

    Cancer sucks...
