    Default Experimental cat pilots

Opinions or thoughts on different ignition setups. My engine is healthy with bendix mags, will be getting an engine overhaul soon and intrested in these ignitions the exp guys can use http://www.vansairforce.com/communit...ad.php?t=51033

What advantages or disadvantages in comparison to the bendix mags? One I see clear is the use of inexpensive auto spark plugs.

One negative is a lot of electronic noise. I flew to OSH in a RV8 and my tablet with Naviator wouldn't work. It works fine in my Tri or my truck. He uses auto plugs and mogas and it runs strong. 200hp O360 with CS prop. Also had a lot of intercom noise till I figured out I didn't have the ANR turned on in the BOSE headset.

We put a certified electronic ignition on a friends Super Cub. He flies over 300 hours a year. It idles and starts better but he didn't see the fuel savings because he doesn't fly high enough for that advantage.

    What electronic ignitions are certified?

Seen that before. The kicker is that you have to leave one conventional mag.

Doesn't make any difference if you look at how the flame front works if you had two electronic or one.

I understand that, but in a perfect world, all plugs would fire at the same time.

Not really. Some Continental engines, C145 and O300 for example, stagger the mag timing of the top and bottom plugs by several degrees.

C-85 has staggered timing between top and bottom, 2 deg difference. Getting the stagger reversed made my 85 run hotter oil temp FWIW.
