Eclipse-if you can't come
I have attached a link for those of you that won’t be able to view the eclipse this next week. NASA has awarded a grant to multiple Universities and High Schools across the country to be involved. Engineering students from Montana State University designed most of the equipment and then hosted students from across the country to travel to Bozeman to learn how to assemble and operate the equipment. They will be launching balloons along the path of the eclipse to attain altitudes from 75,000 to 100,000 feet with real time video cameras attached to view the eclipse. I watched the Montana State University students and their advisors at my airport earlier this summer when they launched two test balloons west of Rexburg, Idaho and tracked them. It was heartening to see students actively involved in their learning and sharing it with others.

Is the eclipse going to be passing near you in Ashton, Bob?

Hi,
I'd like to see a picture looking down, catching the shadow on the earths surface surrounded by daylight.

Re: Eclipse-if you can't come
I flew into Stanley, ID to our friends ranch, we'll be watching the eclipse on the center line at 7000 feet. It'll be too early for gin and tonics.

Not quite centered at home, but I'll be at the airport working which is in the totality. The local news has been making a big deal of the crowds that will supposedly be here, but I'm not believing it, but just in case I have extra bread and toilet paper.

We are 3 miles from center and 150 from your place. How about delivery service.

I've decided to head to Russellville-logan County (4M7) in KY. Should be a nice day to skip work

Same here in Stanley. Lots of areas set aside for camping and still plenty of room

Re: Eclipse-if you can't come
I'm planning to fly the ~75 miles to the center line of it to watch tomorrow, but there's a fair chance of cloud cover in this area for tomorrow afternoon. I'm now torn between watching from the ground and hopefully seeing it well enough, or filing IFR and flying slowly along its path and watching from above the cloud layer. I guess I'll see just how dense the clouds are tomorrow and decide.
It would be neat to see the shadow move across the ground and see it from the air, but I also want to see what the animals and birds etc. do when it goes dark.
