Cont. O-200-A engine in a Vagabond
Has anyone installed an O-200 engine in a Vagabond?
If so, any issues, difficulties or limitations?

Seen it done. Full electric, wing tanks. Weight and balance biggest problem. Ended up with an airplane that a 150 lb. pilot solo would take it to gross. No idea how it was approved.

Hi Frank,
Yes, MAUW is always a challenge - even for me in my A65 powered Vag!
I was wondering more about practical installation issues.
For example, are new bearers required and new cowling required?
Any weights need adding down the tail to keep the CofG in limits etc.

Tony,
A O-200 should bolt right on. Now a starter and generator might not. The problem with the O-200
is going to be prop selection, not as many choices as a C-85.
Maybe a C-85 with O-200 crankshaft? Mine came out as 97 hp on a dyno.
Have the thru bolt mod done and you just about have a 0-200.

Hi Dave,
The person has a PA15 and may be able to buy an O-200.
Weight is always going to be an issue but he flies from 4000ft AMSL airstrip in S. Africa.
No easy answer I suppose.

Most airplanes designed for an A65 don't have room for the starter and generator unless significant modifications are made. The usual options are bumps in the firewall or extending the motor mount.
I occasionally fly a Champ with an extended motor mount. It is noticeably nose heavy. It also required non-significant cowling mods.
Battery, starter and generator are a lot of weight for a Vag. Are additional fuel tanks required for the increase in HP?

Re: Cont. O-200-A engine in a Vagabond
I have a friend flying a clipped wing cub that has a battery and a starter with no other electrical systems. No charging system. He claims 20 starts between charges on the O-320 but I think he is keeping it on a maintainer unless he is away from home with it. Depending on the rules at the location, an Odyssey or Earthx battery with a light weight starter sans a charging system may work well without adding a lot of weight. Otherwise, hand propping an O-200 wouldn't be any harder than propping the A-65 and possibly keep the weight increase down to less than 20 pounds and keep the airframe alterations to a minimum if not eliminate them.

Hmm, I wonder of one of the new small starters would fit without other mods?

Re: Cont. O-200-A engine in a Vagabond
Looking for information on the motor mount. Is there any right thrust in the motor mount and would it help if there was? I am building a Wag-A-Bond and plan to use the O-200 so before I build the motor mount I would like to know if any changes are in order.
Thanks for any input,
Steve

I know it is common to angle the engine a little but everything on the Vagabond drawings looks to be square with the fuselage centerline. I don’t have access to one to run out and measure.
