Maule tailwheel
I have followed the posts regarding tailwheel shimmy, tailwheel spring arch, etc. My Maule shimmy has gotten worse and worse in my 1950 Pa-20.
I have been told that Maules are prone to shimmy anyway. True?
I’d like a Scott 3200, but I’d have to sell one of my children to afford one...
Assuming I get the leaf springs right, will it work?
Is fixing the Maule a lost cause? Good money after bad?
Thanks!

Re: Maule tailwheel
I ran the small solid tire Maule on my Clipper and had not issues till I snapped the axle in a crazy crosswind. The fork works real well as a tailskid. Maule tailwheels are simple and shimmy for the same reason Scott's do. Mke sure the tailwheel is in good shape and the arch of the spring is correct.

Make sure the lock pin isn't worn. Jack it up and check it for play. A little movement in the pin can resonate in to a big movement in the wheel. Also what springs are you using?

Re: Maule tailwheel
The 50 Pacer has a rubber pad that goes between the tail spring support and the springs. Make sure it's installed and not compressed or worn out. Univair has the part for a couple bucks. Whoops, it's 8 bucks now http://www.univair.com/piper/piper-j...pring-top-pad/

Re: Maule tailwheel
I have had the small solid tire on my 22/20 since I purchased it. Never had shimmy. If you have the larger inflatable tire, I have
seen them shimmy some. I have replaced the bushing and the parts Frank has mentioned once, not because of a problem
but just to tighten things up and it is not as expensive as a new anything. The pivot axis cannot be leaning aft on any
tailwheel as it will support shimmy. see my dwg on my sight or Gilbert's dwg on how the spring should position that
axis of rotation

Re: Maule tailwheel
OK Here is my 3 cents worth.
I had a solid Maule on my Starduster Too with a J-3 spring. No problems except wore out two tires. Starduster has 180# in 3 point on the tail. Well I thought it would be cool and look better with the big Maule and the same J-3 spring. WRONG My first landing on pavement was very interesting. The Maule DOES NOT shimmy they do 360s. In fact it was so violent that it threw off the hub cap and snap ring. I put a Scott 3200 on the J-3 spring and not much of an arch left, that has been on the plane since 1973 and have had NO problems. Everybody I know that has used the big Maule has had the same problem. The big Maule has two different steering springs that are supposed to solve the shimmy. WRONG again. We have 3200s on our Pacer, Starduster, and 7GC Champion with no problems.
IMHO the SMALL Maule would work fine on a Pacer, probably the type, Small Scott, they came with.
Just looked up what our 1952 Pacer came with a Scott tailwheel model #3-24b and was changed to a 3200 in 1974

So what is the purpose of this. Yes the Pacer has one but the Starduster doesn't.

I also had really bad shimmy with a maul tail wheel and original 1 1/4 springs that needed re-arching. Installed the ABW PA-18 spring, ABW 3200 tail wheel and replaced the bolts.
The spring bolted right up just make sure you have some extra washers and cotter pins for adjustments.
Bolt I used: AN6-26A spring to fuselage, AN7-21A spring to tail wheel. AN4-15A you may need a little longer lengths.
I took her up and no shimmy no matter how I bounced her in.
If you can't afford the the combo try replacing just the spring with the 1 3/4 ABW PA-18 spring. That may just do the trick for you.
