Scotch brite is usually my first choice in conjunction with a good cleaning and protective measures. Airworthiness of the part will likely become a factor pretty quick if doing much more than scuffing the surface.
Jeff
Thank you. Do you just use the scotch brite dry?
Have you looked under the steel parts riveted to the spar? I’ve rebuilt several that looked good until I removed the steel hinges. The spar was almost corroded through.
I believe Brian has some pictures of what he found in my aileron spar

I use these: 3M-18733 Roloc Bristle Disc Grade - 120 grit (white). They also come in 80 and 50 grit.
Yes. If just removing small amounts of surface corrosion I do it by hand. If doing a lot I switch to the roloc scotch brite discs or wheels. I wipe with a rag dampened with acetone to check my progress. I have used the scotch brite wheels for a dremel when working a bad spot in a tight area but those are expensive and do not last very long.
Theo, Have you read this thread? Some good information on this subject within this thread. I think you will find a lot of it extremely helpful with your current project.
