Well it appears that using the official USA inflation index that the rate has been increased approximately 10 times between 1950 and 2017....so if you paid $5000 for a new Pacer in the 1950's it's inflated value would be $50,000 today. I was surprised to see such a large price difference between a Pacer 135 and a Tripacer 135 in the 50's....its almost the other way around these days.

FWIW I bought a well equipped new 1967 Cherokee for 10,100 in Feb 1968 and was allowed $1800 in trade for my 7AC Champ. In 1962 my P model Bonanza sold for $33,035. Those prices would equal $75,723 and $271,617 today. For a comparison in 1967 we had a new two story 2400 square foot house built for $24,000.

Taking the price from Steve's 1956 "Used aircraft price guide" I see my PA17 Vagabond is worth $19,900 today!
    Hmmm....

I regularly do all sorts of projects and know I put way more in than I would ever get back but don't care as I don't usually sell them anyway. I have a large barn. I get asked if I'd sell stuff all the time and I always say ask my widow.

    Hi Tony,
The inflation numbers are just that...they certainly don't deal with supply and demand. It's pretty clear that back in the day a Tripacer cost close to 20% more than a Super Cub but today a Super Cub is worth 3 times more than a Tripacer. Your PA-17 is in its own market today and has little to do with the original cost. How come all of us smart guys didn't buy Super Cubs years ago and leave them in a barn?

Maybe you should make some itemized price lists as if you WERE going to sell them, and put them in the document folder your widow will use if that unfortunate time comes. So she will know the correct value and not get taken by some slick dude in her time of grief.
Maybe AOPA Vref plus all the goodies would be a good place to start.

But lets all keep flying for a long time, right?

    Robert,

Yes, it wa just interesting just to see what a Vag was selling for all those years ago.
Here in UK a Vagabond will usually by sold for somewhere between GBP 18000-20000.
    That is approx $25000 - $27000.

    Tony,
Seems like the little Vag's sell for almost the same money as a Pacer..they are cool little bugsmashers, i like them. R

I just as soon they bury me in it than I give her away for a song. I've spent my life making ends meet and being efficient with dollars. My baby is one piece of me and a bit of class that I will likely take to my grave. Pretty much gave up my left one for her.
