Lets be careful out there.
I was replacing the fuel lines in the wing root and found this piece of wood in the hard line. Right tank, Aft pickup. Just where you would least want it. All evidence says the plane has bee flying like this for years.

Same here, also flying this way for several years. This was in one of the two finger strainers on right tank. Yuck.

Perhaps a broken fuel level dipstick from some time in it's life?

Re: Lets be careful out there.
Steve, The finger strainers were in place, so not a broken dipstick. My guess is someone was trying to stop fuel leaking during some maintenance and forgot to remove the plug. Although, It's unclear to me why you would need to plug that line. Could it have been pumped up there from the aux tank? I 'll have to look at the fuel line routing to see if that makes sense.
Walt Yuck! Mine had a little crud build up, but not that bad. My mentor John had me pull these every few years on my old plane. I never really found anything. I'm glad I had a look at these.

Re: Lets be careful out there.
Probably plugged the line to prevent those winged creatures from entering the line.
Both yours and Walt's are very interesting discoveries.

Re: Lets be careful out there.
This makes me want to do some fuel
line and strainer maintenance.
