So I was standing in the shop looking at the engine and it dawned on me, I think it has a Vernatherm built into the oil filter adapter. If I'm right it's the component behind the nut that's safetied below the filter.
If that's the case then the air door is likely redundant.Attachment 13876

Might be worth pulling the nut to see. I thought my old adapter (reused on the O-360) had a Vernatherm, but it was just a plug!

I agree with Andy and Steve that tape or a plate will be required in the winter to maintain temps. I am not sure how much at this point however. I like Andy's idea using the baffle material.

The oil filter adapter does have a Vernatherm in it. Or something to that effect. There is a spring mechanism in there with a bullet on the end for blocking a port. I know its not an oil filter bypass as I saw that in another spot in the adapter housing.

Gave the baffle pieces a scrub down with Prekote. Then a shot of zinc chromate and Lycoming grey.
Painted the engine mount and airbox with epoxy primer a urethane topcoat. I don't have a paint booth so I paint under a covered area outside, and it never ceases to amaze me how flt aer attracted to fresh paint (see picture with white primer on mount).
Currently out of town for two weeks, so this will give the paint lotsiftime to set up good and hard before reassembly.20180801_200808.jpg20180802_184452.jpg20180803_080408.jpg20180806_115840.jpg20180807_081804.jpg20180807_081816.jpg

Got Floats?! Or at least a snorkel.. Sounds like the water is rising in your neck of the woods.... It's a good time to be working on the upgrade.

Might need both. Seen it worse though. Back in '06 we got 24" in 24 hours. That was fun.
Just got back from vacation, getting all situated and settled back in.
Had to put my dog down, so that knocked the starch out of me and it'll be a bit before I'm back on the project.

    Ok, back at it.
Reinstalled the baffling. Anywhere I could reach that had a gap i sealed it up with silicone. Installed the motor mount, carburetor, airbox, plug wires, and manifold pressure line.
With the engine FINALLY off the stand I installed the front main seal. Not as bad as I thought. Coated seal in motor oil mixed with ultra slick and went slow. Once I'd get it in a new position i would let it rest ten seconds or so before continuing. Seemed to help.
Then I built a frame to transport it the 14 miles to the hangar where the plane is.
Note the beard. I haven't shaved since the last time I flew my plane. If I don't hurry up I'm gonna have to learn guitar and start riding around in a 3 window coupe talking about a house outside La Grange. 20180829_183643.jpg20180830_092821.jpg20180829_194723.jpg

WOW! Beautiful work! Well, I had one day that I could have made it to Cordova, but I have to admit that the silver fishing was too good to pass up! Sooner or later I'll make it.
