Potential new PA16 owner
Hi folks,
just registered here here because I’m looking at joining the ranks of short wing Piper owners, currently flying an L18 c out of a grass strip in the UK.
The Clipper I’m looking at has the o-320 150hp mod and still has the original max takeoff weight in the documentation, it has been suggested to me that in FAA land it can be raised by 150 lbs. Is this correct and if so is there documentation I can show to the CAA in an attempt to get the approval over here.
I'm just starting out on this journey, so will no doubt be back with further questions.
Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Re: Potential new PA16 owner
Welcome aboard Andrew. It’s always heartening to see new ShortWing owners.
I got a 150 lb. gross weight increase on my 150 hp. Clipper from the local FSDO back in 2004. They cannot approve weight increases any more. To get a weight increase or horsepower increase of more than 10 % you have to through FAA engineering. I can send you a copy of my paper work if you want to give a go.
PM me your email address.

does that imply that you can get a gross weight increase of below 10% without going through FAA engineering?

Re: Potential new PA16 owner
You cannot get the FSDO to approve a gross weight increase. Has to go to engineering and they want to do strutctural testing and flight testing. Engines can be field approved up to 10% horsepower increase. There are STCs to install up to 180 hp engine on a Clipper so I think that base is covered.
1) Changes that increase the certificated maximum weight limits (increases in the maximum gross weight, maximum takeoff, or landing weights).

STC |
5) Substituting or altering a reciprocating engine such that the net result is an increase of more than 10 percent greater horsepower.

Re: Potential new PA16 owner
I’m hoping to persuade the UK CAA that this is a proven mod under the FAA and get the same increase, however if they want to go through lots of my money I’ll abandon it, the aircraft is already approved with the engine swap in place.

Thought as much. Thanks. Shame so many windows of opportunity have closed.
