Default PA 20 Serial number and year of manufacture

    Good morning good people,
I am new to this site an I guess this is the first of many questions.

I bought a PA20 that looked a bit sad but the motor was good with good hours. I thought I would fly it some and then re-do the fabric in a few years. The first annual revealed major issues and I decided it had to get a total rebuild. The paperwork says it is a 1954 model but I need to make sure of the year of manufacture before I order any spares. Can someone point me in the right direction or tell me when PA20 1103 was made?

    Thanks
    Johan

The date plate should have the date it was made.
By the look of that tailwheel I can imagine they were getting a good beating on landing rollout

The parts catalog for the PA 20 has a supplement for adding the 54 model. The IPC revision 1 says that the 54 PA 20 starts at 1084.

Date of issue of original airworthiness certificate, if you have it, should be year of manufacture.

Not if it was manufactured before 1956 or 57. The CAA was turned into the FAA. Before that the CAA issued a new air worthiness certificate evey year. Subsequently the FAA issued the last airworthiness to most of our airplanes in 57 or 58.

Johan, I would be sure and get the PA20 parts manual from Univair. It calls out part numbers and serial number applicability. Also the pilot operating handbook and the Short Wing Piper Club drawing CD as well. We look forward to following your rebuild.

Not on a ShortWing data plate.

With the serial number Clyde Smith can provide you wit a copy of the factory build sheet.

Steve, good to know the CAA/FAA thing. Mine was a 1960 Tri-Pacer now Pacer and airworthiness certificate was issue in Feb of 60. Gilbert is there dates on the build sheets from Clyde?

The factory build sheet has the “roll out” date. The FAA CD also has the original airworthiness certificate. The original log book also has the date of the acceptance test flight.
