Tail Brace Wires
I have a 1957 PA22-150 with round wires. I have read every post I could find here regarding the brace wires. My tail vertical fin did not have the bent washers (40131) installed. Now it does, but I suspect that the horizontal stabilizer’s bushings (82732-72) were assembled incorrectly. Can someone provide some close up photos or detailed description of the upper and lower stabilizer tie rod attachments that show the proper installation stack of the hardware parts after completion of SL 400? I have the exploded diagram, but would like to see what it looks like after proper assembly. It is my understanding that the clevis needs to be able to move to remain in line with the brace wire because the stabilizer moves while trimming. My clevis does not move. Do the bushings sit outside of theclevis or slide into the clevis? Thanks.

Re: Tail Brace Wires
Thank you Steve for the response and info. Can you confirm that the bushing enables the horizontal stabilizer clevis to move with the brace wire and that the movement can be checked during preflight by gently tugging on the wire? Your info is very helpful. I would still like to see a close up photo of an installed bushing if someone has one. My bushing installation looks odd to me and my clevis does not move, so I'd like to compare with a correct one.

Re: Tail Brace Wires
Once the bushing is installed you can't see it and I can't tell that it moves but it has to a little bit.

Re: Tail Brace Wires
I thought the bushing should be out of sight. Thanks. My bushing seems to be sitting on top of the clevis, so something is wrong.

Re: Tail Brace Wires
It is a pain to get both the top and bottom bushing in the clevis' and the bolt tight without the bushing popping out.

Looking at the PA22 parts catalog, the 40131 washers appear to be only applicable to s/n 8000 or later (Colts).

The Piper drawings have a note that you may use the Colt system on the earlier PA-22s and the PA-20. Also, there is an AD to either repetitively inspect or replace the airfoil tail wires with the round ones. He has the Colt system as do I on my 57.

My nurse daughter in law has supplied me with a few stainless steel haemostats which are really handy for this job. Some tape on the jaws, clamp the fork ends together, assemble everything (bushes etc) and tighten the nut.
The haemostats have a small enough end to just grip and lock the clevis ends together and fit around the curvature of the tubing.
Hemostat in the USA most probably!
