    Default Alternator Field Switch

I have the InterAV alternator installed. No Field Switch that I can find. The Installation Instruction Schematic shows "original field switch". The AC electrical schematic shows nothing like this. Is such a switch required? If so can someone recommend a part number and wire size?

Is the circuit breaker acting as a field switch?

Don't think the CB is used as a switch. Glen do you have a switch installed? If was it original eqpt?

Are you saying that you have no way of controlling when its on or off?

Yes. No on/Off control. Seems OK as the installation was done in 1993. Nevertheless I plan to add in a switch soon.

Mine is wired like this. When the engine is turning I want the alternator alternating, and when I don’t (emergency) I’ll pull the CB.

Do you have a double pole / double throw master switch?

I don’t want to hijack the thread but I’ve got a Delco Alternator with a separate “ALT” switch adjacent to the master switch. Is there any reason to turn this off? I’ve been starting with it off and switching it on after start but is there a reason for that? I don’t have any manual reference for it.

    Thanks,

    Chris

I don’t see any reason to turn it off unless there’s a problem with it.

There should be a way to shut off the field but no reason for it to ever be off unless there is a problem. A pullable circuit breaker can be used as a field switch. I installed circuit breaker/switches in the last couple of conversions I installed to save panel space. It also works to use the original generator switch which may be what was meant by “original field switch”.
