Good afternoon to all. Pulled my wheels apart today to put new tubes and tires on and was greeted to an unpleasant surprise. Corrosion on the wheel halves.
Take some 80 grit and sand off all the corrosion(I'd use an angle grinder with a roloc disc), then dress it out with some finer paper. Once that's done, then measure how deep you've gone and give the manufacturer a call, they should be able to tell you how deep is too deep.
If they were mine I would continue sanding/buffing with what ever you are using, clean these areas well with 100% alcohol rinsing out what pitting is left well, alodine, prime, paint and check next year.
The corrosion doesn't look to bad in your pictures. The problem area has been as depicted in the document you posted where the corrosion gets in that bead area and the pressure from the tire pushesout and cracks it there. There was an AD on the earlier wheels for that. I believe it was on the Champs. A friend of mine found corrosion in that bead area on his Super Cub and I got him the aluminum wheels from Alaskan Bushwheel instead of the magnesium wheels like he had. They are a bit heavier but less prone to corrosion.
Re-read the field approval on my brake and wheel installation, the mechanic listed 600x6 Cleveland wheels and and brake discs Model 40-6A as being installed. I think that this is and error as what I have pulled off the plane are 40-60A and I cannot find any information from Cleveland about a Model 40-6A.
Yes, the 40-60A is the 1 1/4" Cleveland wheel. Airframes has them as a direct replacement with the PA20 on their applicability list but not on the PA22. I think I would install their wheels with a logbook entry using the AC 23-27 substitution of parts since it is the same part, TSO'd and PMA'd. Other route would be to buy the STC from Eddie and replace just the wheels since his STC calls out either ABI or Cleveland.
