Tri-Pacer in ND, looking for info
Hi, I’m new here but have taken flight lessons a few years ago. I’ve got time in Cessna 150/152’s but am looking to purchase my own airplane for my instruction, and log flight hours, and to get around. I’d like to purchase a Tri-Pacer to fly and enjoy while I build my dream magic carpet. I’ve read the sticky about the pre-purchase inspection (yes I’m the target audience). I am pretty far away to do anything in person. Would someone in Minnesota or North Dakota be interested in helping a young lady possibly buy her first Airplane? Oh, and I’ve already reached out to Rick at Raven Aviation about finding a Tri-Pacer of my own.

Re: Tri-Pacer in ND, looking for info
Just to follow up. I talked to the A&P who performed the last annual. He seemed very forthright about the condition and history of this aircraft. The owner mentioned that the A&P had an issue with the magneto’s. I then talked to the A&P, the only issue he had was... (surprise, surprises) the magneto’s. Give that this plane has an o-290d2, these would be probably be Bendix Mag’s. So at this point I’ve decided to have a pre-purchase inspection performed. I’m also thinking that the mag’s are definitely going to need the 500hr inspection/major rebuild.
So, I’m I’m wondering if anyone else may know some of the history of N1123C?

Re: Tri-Pacer in ND, looking for info
Seems like a reasonable price if all is as good as it is advertised.
High time engine but I suspect price reflects that.
Be interesting to see how the inspection on goes and engine compressions.
Has it been flown much in recent years. Obviously an engine ovhl or upgrade
may be in the cards down the road. Pics look nice. Panel sparce but should be
more than enough to finish your PPL and build some time.
If the A&P will let you get in on the inspections you might pose some questions
as it goes along on some of the comments posted in the "prepurchase" thread on this site.

What were the isssues with tthee mags? We own a 1953 Tri-Pacer. Light and my wife is short and likes the lower panel. Ours has an O-320. The brake master cylinder on the engine mount is in the way, be sure and check the brake actuating cable under the panel and the fuel line it cross.

Like Steve said, depending upon your height, I am 5ft6in and would like the lower profile panel.
I do not like the single front seat but, at least the brake cylinder is not under the seat.
If you travel with someone significantly taller than you, this may be an issue.
Paint looks pretty good. Do you have a feel for if it has enjoyed life in a hangar? Fabric condition - did the mechanic mention that?
Have you had a chance to look at the logs? Does the plane seem cared for? Or does it seem minimally serviced and somewhat ignored?
Good luck in your search

Re: Tri-Pacer in ND, looking for info
I’ve got the photos of the last annual, from 3/2018. Apparently, the owner before the current one hadn’t performed an annual in 20 years. So the mag’s are due for their 500hr service. The airplane has always been kept inside, thus the nice fabric and even older interior vinyl. I’ve reached an agreement that we split the cost of rebuilding the left Bendix with the impulse coupling on it and replace the plug wires. This will begins as soon as I send the current owner a deposit. My next problem is finding a CFI who would like to fly it back to IYK with me. That’s like 12-16 hours of flight time. I’ll even give the lucky CFI a tour of Los Angeles, and a airline ticket home. Any takers??

Re: Tri-Pacer in ND, looking for info
I’m letting this AC go. I just put money down on a 1959 Tri-Pacer PA-22/150. It’s got sealed wing struts, four new cylinder’s and pistons, new cables, new pulleys, fresh bungee’s and much more. The soon to be former owner ironically enough purchased this airplane to perform the tail dragged STC on too. He’s been a CFI and A&P, he’s had some health issues, and needs to move on. Plus, since it’s in Tehachapi I don’t need to move it from half way across the nation.

That Tehachapi country is neat, especially for a northerner like myself. Enjoy that short wing.

I totally agree. It’s a beautiful area, and a wonderful community. KTSP has an active aviation community as well. I’m sure I’ll be flying in there on a regular basis during my training.
Oh, and thank you. I can’t wait to get lots of flight hours in this nice little plane.
