So instead of pulling the door closed, when the door swings past 180° from where the spring is attached, the pressure is actually holding it against the side of the fuselage. At least i think thats the theory as mine doesn't have the spring.

Now that I see it (thanks Marsha!), the spring is folded under tension when the door is closed. Once opened, it pops straight to hold the door. Clever those Piper guys

Yes. It seems a little backwards at first. . . until you see it in action. Very clever way to hold the door open with little effort. ;-)
