Got a call from Mark Erickson at Dakota Cub about his Super 20. Despite the snow and ice the slotted winged Pacer has flown. As some of you might remember from Oshkosh a few years ago the Super 20 is a PA22/20 with a slotted wing. Dakota Cub developed this slotted wing from Piper's L-14 and got it certified for use on the PA-18 Super Cub and then they certified the Super 18 with the same wing. They have built a Short Wing version with 74" flaps and 74" ailerons moved outboard to the tips. This is an experimental version to test the design and Mark has chosen this venue to make announcements as this project progress. Here are some details and specifications on this project.
Steve,
I will attach several pictures of the Super 20 to three emails and hopefully the file sizes are not to large. As per our discussion the Super 20 flew for the first time yesterday, February 17, 2010. Given the experience we have with the slotted wings on the PA18 Super Cub we were cautiously optimistic about the application of the slots to the short wing Pipers. With the higher angle of attack on the ground that a stock Super Cub and the fact the slotted wings work well at high angles of attack it seemed like a natural fit to add slots to the Pacer. We have a standard Sensenich 74-58 prop on the 160HP, 0-320-B2B. 26" Goodyear tires on stock landing gear (Univair conversion). We have not been able to do any short field performance work given the snow conditions we have (and lots of ice). The first take off was impressive though with two people, about half fuel, off the driveway, and slightly uphill. It will be interesting to get some more formal testing done and see how things shake out. We flew approximately 4 hours and did see an airspeed of 122mph at 2500 RPM. In slow flight it was down to 25mph on GPS into an approximate 10mph headwind and was exhibiting good control characteristics. I feel confident at this time to say it will work well under 40mph, probably better. Initial handling characteristics seem very good and aileron control at low speed is excellent. More on that when we have time to fly (weather permitting).
Please call with any questions or concerns you may have.
Thank you,
Mark Erickson
Mark is a very busy person and is working on many projects and would like to keep us all abreast of the progress on this project here on the forum rather than via phone calls. I have been asked about possibly bring this airplane to Sun & Fun in a few months. I am very excited about this opportunity and hope we can make it work. As soon as I can I will have more details and hopefully my own pilot report on the Super 20. Stay tuned and if you have any questions ask away and if I don't know the answers I will find out.

Whooo-hooo. Way to go Mark. That really is fantastic! Looking forward to seeing the wings certified. Better start saving my quarters (and dimes, nickles, krugerands, etc.) because I'm going to want some. And....THANK YOU for your important contributions to safety and performance in GA.
Stephen, Checkout the file on the first post. They are 2" longer than stock but squared like you have been doing with the ailerons moved outboard and extended 2" with the flap extended from 52" to 74". Overall wingspan is 154". The slots are a little heavier but from flying the Super 18 I can live with a little more weight for the performance of this wing. Can't ait to fly it.
Have they indicated what their ultimate plan for these are yet? Is the intent to get them STC'd? Any idea as to possible time frame? Those wings look great. Is this the birth of the SUPERSTUB!
