Strut and undercarriage fairings for Vagabond

    Greetings,

Noticed a few Vagabond pics showing fairings on struts and u/c. Have been considering doing this myself.

Any cruise speed advantage and does anyone have any templates/tips they would like to share? Making templates is more difficult than one thinks!

You could probably copy the strut fairings from a Clipper or Pacer but you couldn't use the rubber spacer like used on the pacer because of the aileron cable running up the strut. I would think the Clipper gear fairing would fit as well. I doubt they would make the Vagabond much faster but it would be interesting to see.

I don't remember his name but my favorite ShortWing owner quote from Oshkosh last summer:

"You can only make a swing set go through the air so fast."

I once saw a Champ that had the full "Miss Pearl" type aerodynamic treatment. He claimed it helped the speed considerably. Maybe you're on to something with the fairing idea.

Best way to get there earlier in a Vagabond is to leave earlier.

Very, true, but it's just so much fun getting there in your own airplane.

A local Clipper owner, and recently retired test pilot for Boeing F-18 program, says you only have a fast airplane if it indicates more than 450 knots.

It's all relative I think. I flew a Long EZ for a while and I thought it was fast compared to my Clipper. Vags are a lot faster than J3s.

A couple of weeks ago the Mighty Vagabond actually beat a Bonanza from Fall City to Oak Harbor!!!
Now, if you talk to the Bo driver he has this excuse about stopping in Arlington on the way up, but I'm sure that's just bullfeathers to cover up his embaressment.
Spam can drivers are so hard to trust.
