Thread: stall indicator

    stall indicator

I am looking for info about the PA 20 stall indicator. It is shown as a safe flight indicator in the Univair IPC as pn 450 675. It looks like the tab on my wing unit might be broken off,as I do not know how long it is to start with, someone may have painted the end of it to hide it. Anyways I can not find the pn at univair or aircraft spruce or when I search it on the internet. So if anybody knows anything about these stall indicators I would appreciate the info.

Forgot to say the Univair IPC does not give a pn for the wing unit itself. The data tag on the wing unit has pn 3013 on it.

I have one that the switch in the wing is a part number C52207-4 by Safe Flight Instruments in White Plains New York. The vane on mine sticks out 15/32". They are actually still in business. I replaced the switch in a Saratoga several years ago and it cost about $1K. Part # is 148-7 but it has 3/4" vane. I still have the broken switch. You could say I am a pack rat.

The PA-20s (20-1 thru 20-811) and Tripes (22-1 thru 353) originally had a Safe Flight p/n #164 wing sending unit and the PA-16s had a S-Flt p/n #1-03-000 sender. Both "types" used the same panel indicator #1-02-000, but that panel unit was MODIFIED (iaw PAC Dwg 12802) in the PA-20s and 22s. I'm supposed to have 12802 SOMEwhere, but I haven't seen it in 25 years! I don't remember what the mod did (sorry...). You could still get it from Piper, though (it's a "system drawing").

I offer this so that if you call Safe Flight (Sales: 914-220-1181), this may get you answers that "not knowing" these original part nos. might not get you. Just about anybody that worked at Safe Flight when these parts first started being used would be deep into retirement by now! Don't know if the p/n Steve lists superceded this p/n, or what... but these are good numbers for the "early" OEM ones.

I occasionally spot a model #164 sender in a box in somebody's shed (and snap it up), or digging through boxes at a Fly Mart, but I only have the one for my Clipper right now. I dunno what else that sender was used on (PROBABLY everything in the early 50s!) but start kickin' under bushes!

Thanks for the info Aircraft Spruce has the p/n Steve listed there for a paltry $2500.00, but the wing unit is $1700.00, and cheap at half the price. So I will have to start searching my used rent a wreck sources. I can't say that i have much nice to say about the aircraft parts industry at the moment. There aren't enough four letter words to string together without making a few up.

If you reckon that's bad try mentioning "aeroplane" in Australia. The price doubles or trebles and the excuse is always "exchange rate, small numbers, manufacturing costs etc. etc. etc."
Funny but the prices always go UP when the exchange rate is low but never comes DOWN when it is high. That is why I have a spreadsheet of everything I need, from nuts and bolts to paint that I intend to buy at Sun and Fun. If your an exhibitor at S & F, sharpen your pencil if you see a curly headed Aussie coming toward you with smoke coming off his credit card - he's ready to deal!

But I guess "gouging" is universal. There was a complaint on the Wagaero homebuilders site - Aircraft Spruce wanted $US129.95 for a 37degree flaring tool. The bloke got EXACTLY the same tool (same Brand, part no. and everything) from speedwaymotors.com for $54.95. The internet is a wonderful shopping tool!

The AFM that I have lists the stall warning system as optional equipment, and I saw no mention of it in the type certificate. Is this system optional or was it a CAR 3 certification requirement? Do all the pacers have a stall warning?

It was an option. I don't see anything but originally restored Clippers with the unit installed.

    Thanks for the tip "speedwaymotors.com"
I owe you a pint for that one.
