Wing mods - moving ailerons out to tip
i was surfing and came accross a site following the rebuild of a tripacer. It had this picture showing his wings with the ailerons moved out to the wing tips.

Does anyone have an STC for this or was this just a onetime STC?

Re: Wing mods - moving ailerons out to tip
Used to be done under field approval up here, long gone are those days. Trimmer is working on an STC, but don't know for how long or if he will finish it.

Re: Wing mods - moving ailerons out to tip
That is an interesting approach, nothing is actually moved, the aileron is extended outboard. They must be around six feet long. This plane might have a roll rate better than a Clipper.
My design is in aircraft certification, but is progressing very slowly. I hope to add six inches to the aileron, which will not require an extra hinge. Then move them outboard to the tips. Also, I hope to lengthen the flaps both directions and add extra hinge. We are working through the load calculations.

A PA22-160 I work on from time to time was modified like this, the wings were squared off, the aileron bays were lengthened, the ailerons were lengthened by 18 1/4" by a spar splice. An additional hinge was added to support the extended aileron. The flaps were not modified. All of this was done via field approval.

So Stephen, you're working on an STC for this too?

When I ordered the trimmer fuels selector STC last year I asked Eddie about his flap and aileron STC and it sounded like work was halted on it due to the cost of the engineer needed to finish the STC. I don't know if things have changed but Eddie is a really nice guy so I'd give him a call if your interested.

Re: Wing mods - moving ailerons out to tip
Was able to go to Dakota Cub last week. Their slotted Pacer wings have the Flaps extended with 3 hinge points. They also extended the aileron to the end as well. I did not actually get to see them as I believe they are currently in the possession of Steve Peirce. I didn't ask if they would eventually be STC'd or just stay experimental. Likely very $$$$$ though as I would expect you have to buy the entire wing set.

Tim, The plan is to STC the Dakota Slotted Pacer wings and yes it will be a complete wing and control surface replacement. I am sure it will be in excess of $20K. Too much on my plate at the moment and hope to get back to this project in the Fall.

I am working through the Appendix A Part 23, "Simplified Design Load Criteria" with the ACO's help, but it takes weeks to get small bits of information. If only there was an enigneer loads specialist around to help out....
