Re: insurance ?
If the high quote was Avemco probably normal.
There are only five companies I am told writing insurance for the numerous brokers. You or I wouldn't recognize any of them.
Avemco is the only company that underwrites and sells their own insurance. After annual large increases from Avemco, about six years ago I quit them. Have not had an increase since.
Contact Dana Boucher at Aviation Solutions. He is a broker that will submit your info to the five insurance companies and work with them to get what you need. He has brokered the insurance for many of the members on this site.

Re: insurance ?
You might want to give Ladd Gardner a call.972.250.0400 I know for a fact he is a great Guy and puts a lot back into GA by helping to sponsor grass roots fly-ins.
Ladd Gardner comes from a family rich in aviation. As the son of a cropduster and warbird airshow pilot, he grew up on a small family airstrip where he learned at an early age what really goes into owning an airplane. In high school he and his family restored a Boeing Stearman which he later took to college and earned a Bachelors Degree in Aviation Science. After college, he worked as a CFI before later moving on to fly the Metroliner, the T6 Texan, the P51 Mustang, and the P38 Lightning. Ladd went on to pursue his career as an aviation insurance agent and eventually founded his own agency which today continues to prosper in Addison, Texas.

Re: insurance ?
I agree with all the above. Not sure if this possible (or applicable) that one quoted for a tail - dragger and the other not. Ours being a conversion PA-22/20 I had to make sure that was specifically listed. However I doubt it would have that much impact.
We use a broker that quotes from the typical pool Gilbert mentioned. We've switched around back and forth between some of them with the same exact coverage but always been with the same broker. For whatever reason sometimes A is a better rate than B and the next year it switches back. We are in the $600 range for two fairly low time (<500 hour) pilots. Even when I was getting my ticket in this plane we were paying around $1000

I was with AVEMCO during my Pacer restoration. I insured it for hull only on ground not in motion. At renewal time they raised my rate $75.00. I asked why, and they said they had the type wrong the first year and after correcting it to show it a tail dragger the rate went up $75.00. When I asked what difference it made for on the ground not in motion whether it is a tail dragger or nose wheel ? There response was they just charge more for tail wheel, even in my case it didn't matter that it wasn't flying.

Re: Insurance renewal time....good news
I know this is an old thread, but I’m shopping for insurance now. Have there been any changes to the information provided in this thread?

Re: Insurance renewal time....good news
My insurance went up about $100 this year. Nothing changed on my end except more time in type. I was told by my agent that there were rate increases due to my "type of aircraft." I'm assuming that means tailwheel, but who knows. I work with Falcon Insurance out of Texas.
I was at $658/yr. last year. Now about $750. Ugh.
