Re: O-320 Oil Cooler Baffle STC
Anyone have Stewart Drawing number 10012 for the oil cooler reinforcement on the rear baffle? Bought the STC but wanted to get started on it before it arrives via snail mail.

Re: O-320 Oil Cooler Baffle STC
Steve,
Do have any pictures of the oil lines from the accessory case to the cooler...or a list of the fittings? Im using a Casper labs spin on oil filter...have to use a 45 degree AN8 to NPT to clear the filter adapter.

Re: O-320 Oil Cooler Baffle STC
I can't imagine why anyone would want to shift the oil cooler onto the baffle. There's barely enough room behind the engine for the magnetos let alone more junk. Most baffle material is low grade 6061 or worse, not tough enough to carry the load and vibration and secured with bobbypins. Where the hell are you going to steal the cooling air from? The engine needs all the air it can get from the nose cowl openings especially as a lot is already being pilfered for carb heat, cabin heat though the muffler shroud and magneto blast. If your front cooler brackets are breaking it's because the cooler is touching the edges of the cooler inlet. You don't need to blank any cooler if you install a thermostatic valve (Vernatherm) to control the flow. Now that Hartzell controls Plane Power, the current model SAL12-70 certainly needs work on the cooler brackets and the front right baffle needs a slot for the alternator brace. Flex oil lines goes without saying. Teflon with integral firesleeve. Only the best.
I'll post a pic of my installation when I get a moment.

Re: O-320 Oil Cooler Baffle STC
Frank, welcome to the Short Wing Pipers Forum.
My baffles are are 2024T6 with a short 4130 angle on the outside corner. Plenty of cooling air with good baffle sealing material from McFarland.
1400 hours on them and nary a crack. Purchased from Vans and modified for the Clipper Cowl.
CHT on #4 with OAT 85 never goes above 360 at 75% power. Climb in same conditions at 80mph, CHT will approach 400. All the other cylinders are lower. Temp spread never more than 20 degrees.
Solved the left mag access problem and got rid of the Muffler AD by installing a Sutton exhaust.
Frank, if you are happy with your front mount cooler by all means keep it.

Welcome. I agree and am not a fan of rear mounted oil coolers for the reasons you stated. However, even with a Vernatherm you will need to cover the cooler in colder weather. I have been down that road before. From what I have found on other forums cold oil flows through the cooler and past the open vernatherm at the same time. Once the vernatherm closes than all hot oil is routed to cooler.
