Default PA17 Vagabond Rate of Climb

Has anyone carried out accurate rate of climb checks, at 1150 lb MAUW, for an A65 powered Vag fitted with a wooden prop? Just wondered if anyone managed to achieve the original Piper figures?

    A bit light on replies!
So no one has to do ROC checks at MAUW then for the annual renewal etc?

    Tony,
Why would you do this? Regulations?
    A stock PA-17? I don't know if I have ever seen a "stock"
    Vagabond.

I'd like to tell you the rate of climb on my purely stock PA-17 but being purely stock it has no rate of climb indicator.
I never fly it high enough to get a good number with a stop watch, even if I had one which I don't.

    Dave/Gilbert,

When changing a prop we have to do some performance tests. One of these is ROC at MAUW (or slightly less) over five minutes, starting from, say, 1500 ft. AMSL. In an A65 powered Vag you are only likely to gain 2000ft!
The original "Airplane Flight Card" gives ROC at various altitudes and OATs. Just wondered if anyone has done some tests to see if their aircraft performs as specified in 1948....

Piper Vagabond.... The most fun you can have on the the way down from cruise altitude. I never thought much about the climb performance. I like flying them and they are great for yanking and banking but you sure need to plan ahead flying in the mountains. Metal props sure make a difference in performance.

    RE: mountain flying.
I had a J-3 years ago with a C-85 and always got strange looks when I would top the tank and with two on board and flew out of Big Bear lake in So. Cal. 8000ft.
Looking at a PA-15 to buy with a C-85 on it,should be about the same? Or am I missing something here I should be told about?

I think Jason's Vagabond experience has probably been in a
    65(???) Lycoming Vagabond.
Mine has a 85, weighs 750, has a 44 in Climb prop and
Does a very nice job. I would think you would want a
    Mixture control, mine does.
You lost 6 ft of wingspan with the Vagabond, so you
Won't have J-3 performance, but your J-3 probably
    didn't cruise at 95 either.
18 years J-3 flying, 1 Vagabond, take it for what it's worth.

    Thanks Dave,
The one I'm looking at has a mixture control but not sure what prop. I thought they weighed in around 625 lbs? Nice low time very clean plane with two doors, grove brakes, wing tank, shoulder harness and radio with intercom. but at $30,000.?? Never flown one. I just am not sure about them. Had my J-3 12 years and landed it everywhere even on sandbars on the Co. River and it cruised at around 75.

    Mike,
They may have weighed 625 new, full of helium,
Now I'll bet yours is close to 800.
