Best Piper Colt modifications
Ok, so it looks like I may very soon be the owner of a 1961 Piper Colt.
I'm wondering what the best modifications are that can be done on a limited budget to make the plane better - especially for the south Texas heat? And... what modifications can I do later on if I end up having more money to spend on it?

Looking to be in Detroit tomorrow to see it for the first time in person. Asked around for recommendations on a good mechanic who did a pre-buy for me. Hope it all works out!

STC for "non-ethanol" auto fuel (if you can find it in your area). Extended tip spark plugs. Both will reduce plug fouling/oil contamination and the auto fuel lets you fly more (about 30%) for the same fuel cost.

It already has the auto gas STC.

Dusty, I have not heard of Extended Tip Spark Plugs, can you elaborate and suggest brands & P/Ns for an O-320 powered Tri-Pacer?
Do they cost significantly more than conventional plugs?
Thanks,

Same cost when I checked.

Would that be the same for a Colt?

These are a few things I did to my Colt.
I added Retractable Snap Vents above the original vents. One, it gives you more air when it's hot, and two, I can turn them around to suck out smoke if I have an electrical fire.
The bracket that is on the pilot's side air vent will allow you to adjust to any size opening. Also, some vents have worn and will not stay closed. Solves the problem of opening in flight all of a sudden. Bracket comes from Frank Sperandeo Fayetteville, Ark.
I built the adjustable sun visors out of tinted Plexiglas R A M handheld component parts. Clamps on, comes off in seconds, and move the two visors any where needed.
Tom Anderson, SWPC Tech, has an LED light kit that replaces the two cockpit lights. World of difference at night.
