Re: Powder coating fuselage
Airframes, Inc has their new fuselages powder coated. They are blasted to white metal, coated with a zinc rich powder and then top coated with color. There are two types of powder, one is chemicalproof and one is UV resistant. You need the chemicalproof powder. I have not found anyone close by to do a good job. The powder edges on the sharp edges and it rusts over time. I believe Jim is talking about Robbie Vajdos who does Stearmen restorations.

Finishing Note: Fuselage are shipped bare metal, prime power-coated, 1 color powder-coated or 2 color powder-coated.

Re: Powder coating fuselage
Dan's Aircraft powder coats their builds, and Atlee Dodge also powder coats their parts.
Has there never been an instance of corrosion under paint? I can show you pictures of mine, if not. I don't think anyone would say there is something inherently wrong with paint, more likely poor application or unfavorable conditions leading to the problems. My limited observations have shown the same with powder coating. I just dropped off a bunch of parts to be powder coated, and have zero concern about long term viability because I trust the company will apply the product correctly for the application. I have it good, I dropped my parts off at Advanced Powder Coating in Wasilla, which is who does nearly all of the cub builders work up here including Airframes, and Dan's. If you have concerns about it, call Airframes or Advanced Powder Coating, and find out what questions to ask your local powder coater.

Re: Powder coating fuselage
I talked to Mark at Advanced. He is a wealth of knowledge on powder coating. This was years ago and I couldn't find anyone locally to do it correctly.

Yep, Mark is the guy I was thinking of. I understand that he is an airplane builder himself, so would understand better than most what the requirements are.

Re: Powder coating fuselage
I took a tour of the American Champion factory, All the fuselage and control surfaces are powder coated. As more and more people become more knowledgeable about the process and performance of powder coating the "I heard this and that" is being replaced with real data.

Re: Powder coating fuselage
Unfortunately my real data has not been favorable even when done by a fancy shop with the multi stage prep etc.

I am sure there are places that can do a great job but if they don't it can be expensive to fix years later.
