    Default C90 in a PA-17 Vag

My friend is putting a C90 into his PA-17 and has heard that he may need to fit a different type of carb heat box. He has the original box with the curved aluminum baffle. Is a change necessary?

Are you talking about the baffle under the pushrods that directs air onto the oil sump? If so I have not seen it on a Piper. I think you can use the same airbox on all the small Continentals from looking at the Continental parts manual. The air box is an engine part on a Continental.

Tony, I'm not sure the change is necessary, but I'd be interested in obtaining that original air box if he decides to dispose of it. Also he may need a new nose bowl if he has an original without the rectangular cutout. I'm looking for one of those as well.

    Steve,
No, I am referring to the standard (Vagabond), curved, baffle plate that goes over the mouth/inlet of the carb heat box. The one that is shown on the Vagabond drawings.
    Brett,
I will let him know, though doubt he will replace it. Another friend successfully adapted his lower cowling to take a carb heat box fitted with a Brackett air filter. I am 99% sure he didn't need to modify the nose bowl.

given the most current limit for FSDO's to approve increased horsepower installations on a field approval, has this airframe been previously approved with the C-90?

Tony, I'm not referring to modifying the nose bowl to fit the bracket filter, but to incorporate the rectangular hole that assumedly allows ram air to cool the camshaft area. Original Vagabond nose bowls don't have these, but the Wag Aero cowl does. The rectangular hole is on the PA-11 nose bowl as well. I've got a cover on mine as the A65 runs too cool with it open.

My cowling is all set for a C90 with a Brackett filter. It has an air box with a Brackett filter. I'd rather have an original cowl with the original air box.

Built new cooling baffles for mine and they are exactly the
same as a Cessna 140. That rectangular hole beneath the spinner
Is very important for cooling the C85. That and the Bracket filter
gives it away for people that really know their Vagabonds.

    andya,
There a quite a few C90 Vags flying. Just wanted to ascertain if it was essential or necessary to replace the original air box.

I seem to recall some requirement to have additional fuel beyond stock for the C-90, because of it specific fuel consumption. It was not required for a C-85, because it at least on paper it did not burn as much as the C-90. I'll see if I can find the reference.

There is formula in the FAR's that specifies fuel flow
in relation to horsepower. The FAA inspector had to watch
while I did the test for my fuel tank Field Approval. Mine flowed
    Enough for 160 HP.
