Every installation has to spend 30 minutes in class B or C airspace after the ADSB installation is checked by the same people that do the transponder certification.

If your report looks like this you simply need to fly in rule airspace for more than :30 minutes. Rule airspace is defined as any place ADS-B will be required in 2020, for me all I had to do was get airborne as I am based (like Gilbert) within 30 nm of a Class B primary airport.

Got ur done.

Went over to TOL and did some touch and goes.

Still makes me mad that I can look on flight tracker websites and see everything that I did but that was not good enough for the FAA.

Anyone out there installed the Garmin GDL-82 in a short wing? It appears to be one of the most cost effective solutions.

I think that is the most cost effective solution if you have a good transponder. If you have an old Narco and spend the money on the GDL-82 and then the transponder goes south your are even more money in the hole unless the market is flooded with used older transponders that everyone has removed for new ADSB transponders.

There's some peculiarity to the used transponder market right now. Some people are "upgrade-prone" and some are not. I needed a used transponder recently and was surprised that a decent Garmin GTX327 can be had routinely for about $400 while in many cases the old Narco, Cessna, and King transponders are usually higher priced (typically $450-600). I think the folks who jumped into ADS-B "early" were folks that already had upgraded lots of things already. So they end up pulling out a 4-year-old GTX327 to put in the "latest and greatest" ADS-B hardware. Meanwhile, the people that have limped by for years on their ARC RT359A or Narco AT150 are more likely to continue the "wait and see game" on the ADS-B.

There's a lot of speculation to these comments but I can say for certain that several GTX327s were available at far less cost than the RT359A I was trying to find. I ended up finding a really cheap "slide in replacement" Narco AT165 (fit the Cessna tray) for a little over $200 and that met my criteria of "cheapest Band-Aid that might get me by for a few more years". It was tempting to go a different route but "Band-Aid" was right for me at the time.
