Colt Trim Setting For Takeoff
Does anyone know the approximate trim setting that my Colt should have for takeoff? I have a 1961 Colt that seems to require a lot of nose down trim. On previous Colts, I set it about mid way on the overhead scale, maybe slightly forward. On this new Colt, it must be set very near full forward or the aircraft wants to pitch up around 50 mph on takeoff. Once airborne, the forward trim setting that I use to prevent the pitch up during takeoff acceleration seems to be correct and the aircraft seems to fly fine and is easily trimmed hands off with plenty of extra nose trim remaining. However, there is much more nose up trim capability than nose down once the aircraft is trimmed for level flight. I wondered if the rigging is set wrong, but do not know the required numbers.
Is this common or does it possibly indicate an issue that needs to be addressed? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

The trim indicator is not exact on every airplane. Mark your spot on the plate and then realize it will change a little when loaded differently.

Re: Colt Trim Setting For Takeoff
Thanks for the response. As an A&P, I understand that the indicator scale is not graduated but it does seem to be much further nose down than the previous 2 Colts I have owned. I did not have the correct numbers for the actual rigging requirements, not do I have a prop protractor, so it would not be easy for me to check the stab for correct numbers. I just wondered how common this was as it is quite a bit different from my previous Colts. Thanks again.

Re: Colt Trim Setting For Takeoff
First thought, are your centering bungees still connected or have they been removed?
Second thought, is the hinge point at the REAR of the horizontal stabilizer free and well lubricated?
Lots of mechanics are not aware of that little hole back there that needs a few drops of oil periodically or it might have a grease zerk in it.
The rigging numbers are in the TYPE CERTIFICATE DATA SHEET available on the FAA web site.

Re: Colt Trim Setting For Takeoff
The only thing that could be off if the airplane is not wrecked is the jsckscrew yoke could be upsidedown, should point up. Rera attach point is a welded fitting in the fuselage. I would get a digital level and check per the TCDS.
