Cathy and I and our 12 year old son Lee are planning on attending the Airmen Show this year along with SJ and his wife Laura. Our booth will be right across from the food court, just a place to sit down and take a load off and meet up. Been a couple of years since we attended the Show and are really looking forward to seeing everyone and meeting up with those who we haven't met personally before. Also looking at some sort of gathering on Saturday night and would like to get some sort of head count for that. Anyway, can't wait to get there, show Lee a little bit of Alaska (his first trip to AK) and just have some fun.

Great show, I haven't attended since getting displaced off the 747 up there. I'm sure I'll be back up there one day.

Enjoy the show!

Steve,

If you bring up some of those GUCCI SWPO hats with my name on one or two, I would love to meet F2F and pick them up. I haven't decided if I will fly or drive quite yet (I try to avoid PANC if possible), but, Lord willing, I will be at the show this year.

I'm envious of those attending. Good that young Lee gets to go and see Alaska. Since I retired my free J/S ride non stop out of Louisville isn't available to me anymore. When I finish the airplane I'm building I will go on my own schedule. Ya'll have fun.

Jim, He would just compare the number of electorial delegates between Texas and Alaska with them. ;) He is really into the presidents.

Everyone up there told me during the pipeline days the only thing better than a Texan heading south was a Texan with an Okie under each arm headed south.

We are looking forward to it.

I can still use that SDF-ANC seat but disappearing for a weekend leaving three kids at home with a Mom in grad school (with homework to do) could be dangerous to my health! I was on the -400 up there and got to go to the show a couple times, very enjoyable! Now I'm a Bus driver, I get to be home a lot more!!!

One of these days I need to bring my Pacer over to Louisville (I'm assuming you still live there), we'll have to go flying!

Sounds good Jim. Yup, still in the area. I used the sdf-jfk airbus all the time when I was working. Easy to store bags and sit against the wall, fall asleep for the 1+20 block. I still have plenty of friends wearing those brown glad rags but some of them are retiring too. I miss my VHHH-PANC trips. Always had at least two days layover. PANC probably a lot different for a commute though!

I might be able to attend this year. Never having gone before is it a 1 day event (meaning you see it all in 1 day) or should someone plan to spend a couple days? Sounds like Saturday night is worth staying for but I'm wondering if I should return Sunday or Monday.

We are going up Thursday and come back Tuesday. You can see the show in a day no problem but talking to folks is another story. We plan to do some sightseeing in Talkeetna as well.

Thanks! My current plan is to fly up with a guy from CO in his Maule the week of the 18th, stay and work from a hotel or AirBNB through the week of the 25th and then fly home the 1st or 2nd of May. The Maule owner flies Air Taxi in Talkeetna and flys up from CO every year so it should be a fun and scenic learning experience!

Clayton, I hope this gentleman is a friend by the end of the trip. We've never met other than a call yesterday. I just responded to an opportunity to ride along posted online. He flies for Talkeetna Air Taxi (http://www.talkeetnaair.com/about-us/team-tat)

I'm jealous of your Alaskan trip! Let us know when it should air on TV.

From what I know, the flying part is the easy part. The paperwork and approvals are the hard part of the trip. I can't recall how one gets to the info, but I think the AOPA had something on the "hard part".

Well it looks like you have done the hard part. I'm already going to Talkeetna on the smoker 5/18 - 6/2 to help a friend with his planes. My airplanes are not going to finish themselves.

need to paint some temp 12 Inch N-#s, My N-Numbers aren't 12" and never had an issue going from Montana to AK last Sept. They are only required if crossing an ADIZ. I came up the Alcan so not an issue.

Call Can customs and with authorization #s get approval to go without the physical sticker in window Had the receipt essentially with the numbers on it for Canadian and US. Canada never asked for it. US Customs did ask for the User Fee Decal number, when I got to Anchorage. Showed them the receipt after they waved a Geiger counter over my right wing and I was good to go.

Have radio license from FCC. I requested it but never received it before leaving. Still haven't received anything from the FCC months later.

Get your EAPiS login to log your manifest for crossing the border each time.

Make sure your insurance coverage works in Canada.

I found this website to be useful in explaining the differences in Canadian airspace. Was a summary after reading through the equivalent of the Canadian AIM: http://www.langleyflyingschool.com/Pages/Canadian%20Aviation%20Regulations.html Pretty much the same as US but they have their Mandatory Frequency MF airports and their rules.

Get to the US Border Patrol in Northway earlier than their website says. I was going to be there 45min before they said they closed. I was told that too late and they had to be heading back to the border by then. So, they gave me the option of overflying Northway then land in Tok to get fuel, then onward to go through Customs at Ted Stevens International in Anchorage which is what I did. Have to stay to the schedule you give them for that overflight so be sure you get a weather forecast before calling up customs from Whitehorse.

AOPA has more of the requirements here: http://www.aopa.org/Flight-Planning/Alaska

Thanks for replies. Extra info all on one sheet helps. Didn't know I could get by without temp #s. Nice. I thot the entire border was an ADIZ. Will look again. Insurance good up to Ak-Can border, then get to re-do in AK. Not required, but liability always a good idea. Don't have paper FCC but will copy and print off internet site, did they ever require you to show it? As I recall, EAPIS requires 2 hours before starting flight and can be pre-submitted up to weeks before, but still have not done that. Am hoping fellow from Kenai will come thru with a guy who flies this route nearly weekly and all my worries will come down to just finishing learning the SMALL details of take-off and landing.

Nice. I thot the entire border was an ADIZ. The US ADIZ starts 12mi off the coast of the Contiguous US and Alaska. There is also the Canadian ADIZ that one needs to pass through when flying the inside-passage route to Alaska in a short-legged airplane. The border between the US and Canada is not part of the ADIZ. This is shown on the sectional. Still need to file a flight plan to cross the border on the contiguous US it just doesn't have to be a Defensive VFR Flight Plan.

Don't have paper FCC but will copy and print off internet site, did they ever require you to show it? . I was never even asked about FCC license. Was as if the requirement didn't exist.

Yes, minimum of 60min before the flight departs (if you're an AOPA member, the web link above has another link to details on usage of EAPis). Remember that you still need to call the US Border Patrol at the Port of Entry you will be landing at. They will give you permission to arrive and you will need to give them an ETA and then keep to it. The call and ETA is also required for landing at the Canadian Port of Entry. Once you've landed at the POE you need to call the Border Patrol again (on either side) and they will either take your info over the phone (was the case for me in Canada) or come take a peek at the airplane (as they did in AK).

I bought the Foreflight Canadian subscription so I had all of their charts for the trip. I also bought paper copies but never opened them. Hope the trip works for you. I enjoyed it. My wife wants to do a round-trip just for the experience. Who am I to argue? :-) Have to get that planned some day in the future for Oshkosh.

Not required through Canada - there's no ADIZ and Canada doesn't require them (or they didn't last summer when I crossed).

EDIT: flynfish beat me to it and his info matches my experience.

One of his daughters is planning to learn to fly in it. Off to breakfast and the show shortly. Or as we say in Texas "we are fixin' to go to the show". 8)

We were at Piper's Restraunt and Kevin looked at one of two guys wearing Gary Ward Airshow hats and asked him if he knew Gary Ward, he had seen many of his airshows and was a huge fan. The guy said "as a matter of fact I do" and introduced Kevin to Gary who was sitting across from him. It was pretty funny.

We had a great time visiting with everyone and taking in some of Alaska. More to follow when I get some what caught up.

Hi again Steve,

If your Google account requires you to be a member or a login to access, it may not be able to be linked from. Are these the same pictures you've posted on a different thread? I seem to remember the tunnel entrance picture from elsewhere around here.

Steve, Yes, they are working now for me. Just curious why you're using a photo hosting service when you have the server holding this site already?

I liked Picasa way better than Google Photos. I think it should work now.

I spent the last 30 min at the airmen show and by the time I was done with business half the booths were empty…

I was stopped by more then ten people along the way though which was fun in itself…

I did fly up again the next weekend for the Hudson Memorial in Talkeetna and helped with the Talkeetna Roadhouse's pancake feed. We served 230 plates of hotcakes and scrambled eggs to hungry pilots and all comers. There was a requested donation to the Talkeetna Build-a-plane foundation and people were stuffing the spinner all morning.

The night before we flew out west about 30 miles to the "Herc strip" with my buddy justin and his new 180. Beacon wrapped moose burgers grilled on hot spruce coals… After dinner we hiked down this trail to the river led by his son Zack and there next to the river was a pile of stones painted with red circles and propellers on them. I said geocaich? and Justins says we stumbled on one of the Hudson Airshow scavenger hunt sites. Of course.

Justin is one of my shop success stories. He came out years ago as a shop hand and we flew the Batplane around the country side floats wheels and skis. For a few years afterwards he would always email me adds for airplanes, how about this one? So last fall he found a 235 Citabria for about 14K, i know its not a short wing, soloed in a few weeks, took his checkride last month, 180 deal pops up, pre buy guy buys his citabria, anyway he is on to his next adventure…

hmmm. Tried to upload photos but I guess I need to update Adobe flash...AGAIN! I've seen this error before. I really despise the whole Adobe product structure.

This really is one of the most smooth web forums around except for this product intrusion...

Also, the SWP banner and logo are awesome.
