I was wondering when you know it's time (barring any major failure) to do a top-end overhaul? I have an O-290-D2 with about 1000hours SMOH but a lot of calendar years. What indicators would point that it's time to open the wallet and start bleeding. ;)

I have no way of knowing the complete history of your engine. If you think the extended calendar years and operation is a major factor in determining the amount of risk you are comfortable with, you may have a reputable mechanic look your engine and books over closely and help with your decision. I'll begin by saying to watch her real close, and give immediate attention to anything unusual, such as noises, exhaust leaks, oil leaks. Have compression checks done @ 50 hrs and check oil screen and filter. The most common mode of failure on high-time engines is some type of cylinder head or cylinder valve train failure. Check her real close to catch a developing problem before it renders the engine with significantly less power for when you need it most, or that results in damage requiring complete overhaul. I believe the D2 is a 1600 TBO engine. The cylinders do take a higher beating on these for the extra HP and heat generated from higher compression ratio. You may have lots of hours left, but get out your mirror and flashlight to keep close watch on what is going on under the covers. Best of luck.

I check compression, watch how long it takes the oil to turn black (blow by), inspect for cracks between the cooling ins and inspect around the exhaust flanges for leakage and erosion. I now have access to a borescope can now look at the valves for hot spots. Oil analysis is also a good trend monitor.
