ShortWingPipers.Org will be at the Alaska Airmen's Show in Anchorage, Alaska May 1 and 2. Thanks to Vicki at Tamarack Air for helping me with this and SJ for letting us hang our banner in the Super Cub.Org booth. Will be plenty of chairs to sit around and talk Short Wings. I can't wait since this is one of the shows I have always wanted to attend but never made it happen. Will be great to meet our Alaskan contingent. And yes Steve (Airwrench) I intend to take you up on that left seat time in your Producer. Can't wait. Maybe I can meet MCS Mike, Eddie Trimmer, BatPacer, nicka, StPat, Troy, eskflyer, GeronimoDriver and AKhunter02.

Getting ready for the big show. Thanks to SJ at SuperCub.org and Vicki at Tamarack Air in Fairbanks we are having a big shindig at the Millennium Saturday evening starting at 6. We have reserved a banquet room, a cash bar and there will be a finger food type buffet. Several vendors have donated really nice door prizes. The get-together will include a really great finger-food buffet thanks to the sponsorship dollars from some of our favorite vendors, friends and local businesses!
The menu includes "guy" selections approved by Vicki's husband -- swedish meatballs, chicken wings, quesedillas, submarine sandwiches and pretzels; and several "chick" foods picked by the gals in the Tamarack Air store -- mini quiches, peel and eat shrimp and finger sandwiches.
And one unpronounceable selection and unknown item -- spanakopita -- chosen purely because of the number of letter a's in the name.
As well as a cash bar, coffee etc... and free sodas for the designated drivers/pilots.
Thanks so far to Glacier Air Parts in Palmer, the crew at Atlee Dodge, Univair, Pacific Oil Cooler, Alaskan Bushwheel and Steve Conatser at Airframe Alterations in Fairbanks.
Please fill out the survey here if you think you might attend so that we can plan appropriately. Trying to get Eddie Trimmer there as well.

Steve, I'd love to attend the Saturday evening bash, but will have my entire family in tow as well as additional kids from the swim team...so probably not an option. But I do hope to break away from the swim meet to check out the show...

Head to Anchorage in the morning. Should be bumming around the local airports on Thursday and Friday and the Airmen Show Sat and Sun. Will be working at Tamarack Air in Fairbanks FAI next week to justify staying another weekend so I can make it to Valdez for May Day AirShow and STOL competition http://www.valdezalaska.org/events/flyIn/flyIn.html . Hope to hook up with everyone I can.

Spent the morning at Atlee Dodge's shop visiting with Jim Dyer and Steve Crackie. Neat stuff going on there. New hot rod muffler with a 3" tail pipe gutted with no internal baffles and some heat fins that is getting STC'd for the PA12. I am told it is the same part number as the Pacer. Does away with the recurring AD. Will dig deeper and see about getting the Pacer/TriPacer on the approva llist.
Ate dinner with a friend in Wasila, gonna fly up and visit Eddie Trimmer tomorrow. Will takes some pictures as well.

I just found out the boss is flying us in for Sunday. I'd love to fly my pacer (almost a batpacer) in. Hmmm maybe I can leave Sat. and catch the dinner party. I'll see what the weather and wife think of that idea. Anyway, plan on meeting me on Sunday for sure! Can't wait to meet you Steve!

Wow, I have a had an awesome time up here in the great state of Alaska. This is airplane heaven for sure and I have found Short Wing pipers everywhere in more configurations than ever imaginable. I have also met some great and interesting people. To summarize, I arrived in Anchorage on Wed. April 28th. Thursday morning I was raring to go and spent the morning at F. Atlee Dodge taking a tour and talking to general manager Steve Krackie and Jim Dyer of Univair. Left there and went over to Stoddard's Aircraft Parts on Merrill Field which is about in downtown Anchorage. Man, aircraft superstore. Parts of all kinds from all the major suppliers of our type aircraft and in the back warehouse is a consignment section with everything under the sun.
After keeping my wallet in my pocket (hard to carry aircraft parts on an airliner:smile:) I met up with Steve and Laura Johnson and we drove up to the Big Lake area to eat dinner with a friend. Awesome drive with a beautiful view of the mountains and the Knik River valley which I later learned is a major play ground for many of the Short Wing drivers up here.
On Friday I drove back up to the Big Lake area and my friend Joe and I went to Eddie Trimmer's shop in Willow. Wow, Eddie has a lot of stuff and some neat projects going on from a stretched Pacer to several more getting his gear and door modification. I was supposed to be back in Anchorage in time to help Steve and Laura set up the booth for the Alaskan Airman Show but needless to say I was real late after hanging around Eddie's shop all day talking short wings. If you ever get up here I strongly recommend looking Eddie up. It was nice after so many phone conversations to meet him in person.
After dinner on Friday night I spent the rest of the night (gets dark around 11:00pm) driving and walking around Lake Hood looking at airplanes. Lots of cool stuff including a Pacer with a lumber rack underneath.
Sat and Sunday were a blur meeting so many people and talking about airplanes. It was great to finally meet so many of the Short Wingers from Alaska and talk about their airplanes and where they go and what they do up here. It is truly a pilots paradise.
Sunday afternoon I headed towards Fairbanks with my friend Vicki from Tamarack Air in her Artic Tern. Weather was not looking good through Windy Pass so we stopped in Talkeetna where there is a Flight Service Station to check those neat weather cams they have up here that look through the passes. A look at the cam in Windy Pass didn't look promising but after looking at the loop it was getting better so we decided to get gas and venture around a bit. I walked into Talkeetna Air Taxi hanger that was surrounded by Beavers, Otters and Cessna 180s to look at a Pacer a fellow was working on. Seems he had just bought the airplane as a Tri-Pacer in California and brought it up and had just got the Pacer gear and tail wheel on it. When we started talking about Short Wings he said that I needed to meet Danial. She had done the welding on his and had a 180 hpPacer out on the line that I had been ogling over. I got lucky and she walked into the hanger and gave me the grand tour around her airplane after removing the engine and prop covers to show me her 180 hp installation and the big wood prop she was running. The plane was on wheel skis and she uses it to get away to her cabin she built up on the mountains overlooking Talkeetna which is right at the base of Mt. McKinley which is where she was headed. After checking the weather cam again it appeared the pass was doable so we blasted off on an incredible flight with breathtaking views of Mt. McKinley and surrounding mountains, glaciers, rivers and gorges. I know now why there are so many pilots in the state of Alaska.
Have spent the week working in Vicki's shop on various projects to help offset and somehow justify not being in my own shop for over a week. Thursday we blasted off to Valdez in the Tern for the May Day Fly-In and Shortfield Take Off and Landing competition. Have to cover that trip and event later when I have more time and am able to upload my pictures as well. Having a blast up here but dreading the long flight home and the jet lag and time change adjustment I have been told that accompanies it.

Alaska is the reason I fly and am into taildraggers and the backcountry. I was stationed there for 7 years and had the pleasure of getting to know quite a few pilots up there, and stay friends with many of them. I call the place home and go visit family whenever I can!

That orange Pacer with the lumber rack belongs to Fishing Joe. He used that to haul all of the building materials out into the bush to build his cabin. He flew it to the 1998 Middletown Convention.

ShortWingPipers.Org will be at the Alaska Airmen's Show in Anchorage, Alaska May 1 and 2.
Anyone interested in making a group flight up to this event next May ? I've never been to the 49th state, but would love to fly my pacer up there. Just rather go with a group for the added fun and safety of going with other short wingers. Could turn into an annual event for the SWPO group ??

Paul won every class he entered: Heavy Touring (C-185), Experimental (Carbon Cub), and Bush (PA18-160). Bush class winning take-off was 49feet and landing 63. Very impressive flying this year.

Hoky Smokes Bullwinkle
50 foot take-offs and 60 foot landings
Impressive!
i need to go look and see if a nose wheel was entered and what it did.
This makes a private back-yard strip a real possibility.
bet the neighbors in Waxahachie would be upset though.
