I have a set of 25x11x4 tires for the Vagabond and a old STC SA5-9 that is no longer supported. A guy from Maine has a STC for these tires, STC SA5-65 on most everything Piper except the Vagabond. Is this something a Vintage aircraft DER could approve as a variation to a STC? How is your quest to become a Vintage DER coming Steve? I have to figure a way to get these approved, it just looks so good. IMHO

Dave, with all the supporrting data that you have, why not request a field approval? You'll have to show modified W & B. But, it should work....I did it on my Pacer a couple of years ago, before the STC.

Vintage DER is in the works but I would get a field approval. There is a Tundra tire worksheet the FAA put out a few years ago. I will get i and post.

Thanks, The Field Approval is probably the way to go. When is the Vintage DER actually going to happen?

After a whole lot of phone calls I found one of the FAA inspectors that is approved (?) to do Tundra Tire Field Approvals and it sounds like this will get done.

Dave,

If you ever need another set of those, I have a pair sitting on the floor of the big hangar...

Update: I have a Inspector in DTW that is internally approved for Tundra Tire Field Approvals. (confused yet?)
There are two different part number adapter rings A1 and LWA950's. They are both plastic, one is red, one is black. Need to convince the FAA that they are the same. Need a Load range for the tire, can't find anything on the tire itself. Just because it was approved on a 1950 lb Pacer doesn't mean it's good enough for a 1100 lb Vagabond.
The records division in Anchorage has the STC , however since I am unable to locate the owner I can't use it.
Need another good shot of enthusiasm, currently getting a little bogged down.

Dave,

Is this the Schneider drag racing slicks STC you are refering to?

Skydogk,
It is the Goodyear 25x11x4 blimp tires with Airglas wheel adapters.

Dave,
Where did you find those 25x11x4 tires? Goodyear does not list them, or at least I did not find them on any goodyear site.

The 24X11X4 tires are no longer produced. You have to luck into a nice used set. I have a set that are weather checked a little bit.....thinking about seeing it they can be capped.

49 Clipper,
Those tires are pretty hard to find. Maybe you can talk Brian out of his set and then buy the STC for the Clipper from a guy that goes by Douten @ SuperCub.org. As long as you have 8:00x4 wheels.
I can fix you up with the adapters if you need some. A little weatherchecking wouldn't bother me and I read somewhere that a guy had a set recapped. If you own a PA-15 I could get you approved.

Hi Dave, I have a set that I would like to run but I need tubes, what did you use for tubes. Thanks Scott...

Scott,
I used 8:50x6 tubes and they were very close to the originals.
You're probably going to need some valve stem extensions and lots of patience.

FYI - the set I have have the wheels and brakes with them...they were removed from a Super Cub to convert to 6 inch wheels......I was trying to get an even 1000 for them the last time I had them up for sale...

Old thread, but if anyone is interested in what the Schneider Drag Slick hubs are all about, here's a set I just received. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlyUg6Y_4ZM

It would be interesting to see a plane with this hub and a set of drag slicks tires.

That is interesting, thanks.

And, a lot cheaper than BW's.

What's the weight difference between this and BW's?
