Quick question
can one obtain the STC for an O-320(no suffix) or O-320-A Yes.

now can one modify this engine for a 10hp improvement via a log book entry????
I think Steve said yes. Must follow Lycoming's specifications.

Confirm with YOUR IA that will sign off Your O-320-A installation.
Again assuming one is using a narrow deck O-320-B

Steve, can you confirm????

I believe the engine can be converted to a B from an A with a logbook entry but as far as an STC change I think it would require a field approval. The FSDO can approve up to a 10% horse power gain so it is doable.

I'm takeing out a 290-D2 and installing the 320-B.
Wag aero has a stc for the colt for the 320-B
and one to go from a 290=D2 to a 320-A on the PA-22, but not for the B engine.
I thought this was strange becouse the A engine is listed as an alternate
on the type cert. so you dont need an stc, only if you go to the B eng.
I think its strange that I would need a field appoval for a engine that
is normaly put on that same airframe only a couple of years later.
I'm just trying to find a stc or maybe a copy of some one's 337 field approval
that had already done this install.(to help with my field approval if I cant find a stc)

I'm not clear on what STCs Wag Aero has. They have an STC to install an O-320-B series? If you are using an STC to install the O-320-A series then I would get a field approval to use the B series instead of the A. It can be field approved by the FSDO because there is no more than a 10% increase. Use the STC for the Flight Manual Supplement etc. and the field approval for the substitution of engine models. I would talk to your Primary Maintenance Inspector prior to purchasing an STC however.

Model PA-22-160, 2 PCLM (Utility Category), Approved August 27, 1957 (See NOTE 3)

Look at the bottom of this thread and there are two more STC's that might cover the B. Please let us know what you find out. http://www.shortwingpipers.org/forum/showthread.php?5036-STC-Pacer-135-to-Pacer-150/page2&highlight=Copper+River+Airmotive

I'm not the only one to upgrade to the 160 hp eng. I find
it odd that that thier isnt more stc support for this change.
Thanks for the info I'll talk to my IA today

ok
with all of the "your mileage will vary" out of the way

1952-1953 PA-22 is TC-ed for an O-290-D2 yes?
and 1950-1951 for O-290-D...as a BTW

In 1954 Piper has O-320-A available in the PA-22 and not until 1957 the 0-320-B

Steve posted before I could.
but I do totally agree

I have checked locally as it CAN be done, however, GET ALL your ducks lined up first.

Remember, the FAA is here to help you:biggrin:

Here are some more STCs for the O-320. You could also give the PMI some tummy comfort by showing them the Colt 160hp STC.
