Hi Shane, I used the airtex firewall blanket. Worked great. I added an insulation pad with foil baking on each side under the firewall blanket in hopes of lowering heat transfer. I think I got that from airtex also, all worked well. Moe

Hello, I´m looking for a new firewall cover in gray. Aircraftspruce has one, but only in black. Airtex has one too, in various colors. AS thickness is 1/4", Airtex 1 inch, Airtex is 20% more expensive.
I´m wondering about the thickness differences. 1/4" seems very thin.
Has anyone compared both?

Michael, mine is black and I assume ( since I didn't do the rebuild) it's from AS and it doesn't do a very good job of keeping the heat out ,especially in the summer. So, I'm assuming it's 1/4 inch. My .02 worth, get the thicker one.

I use the Spruce blankets on Super Cubs, thicker than original but with the muffler right up against the firewall more insulation is probably better.

Hi Micheal, hope the project is going well! I used the thin light gray blanket with a liner of foil backed insulation doubled up against the firewall. I think I got the insulation from Airtex, but not sure. Moe

Moe, the wings are ready for Ekopoly. Actually they are stored with one layer of Ekofill. This afternoon I try to brush the Ekofill on the inner fabric. My friend is waiting for my sign, that he can install the headliner. ( he´s a saddler. Is that the right word?)
Next steps are to modify the fuel valve, powdercoat the aux fuel tank and to connect all that parts.

Hi Micheal, sounds like good progress! I checked and yes, I used the thin firewall pad and put the insulation from Airtex in between the pad and the firewall to help keep the muffler heat out of the cockpit. Worked good. Moe

On my Vagabond I have a sheet of foil covered asbestos (or asbestos-like) material in the cabin that covers the firewall. Doubt it is original and probably installed by the French when they imported the Vag in the late 50s / early 60s.
It looks like it needs to be replaced (or should be replaced if asbestos) but wondered what is most appropriate to use.
I see from previous posts on this topic that an Airtex "blanket" is sometimes used but wondered what other alternatives there are?
Thanks

Airtex or Spruce if they have one for the Vagabond. Easy to make your own as well with firewall material Spruce sells.
