Yes, the 4201 is an oldie, so that's why I'm trying to find out what it might cost to fix, or even if that is possible. If it's going to cost too much, it's time to modernise. The Surefly looks interesting.

I just went and read some of the info on the Surefly site. It sounds like you run it for 2400 hours....No Inspections, No Rebuilds, No Overhauls.... then throw it away??? Is that correct?

Here's what I saw on their FAQ page (https://www.surefly.aero/faq):
Q: What is the service life of a SIM?
A: Return the SIM to SureFly for evaluation after 2400 hours of SIM operation.

Normally the accessory should be overhauled or replaced at the engine manufactures recommended Overhaul intervals. Most overhaul shops don’t want the extra liability of rebuilding your accessories at engine overhaul. Requiring the mag to be replaced at overhaul or every 2400 hours can be a positive benefit for the both customer and the shop. The liability is assumed by the accessory manufacture as well as the warranty that is provided. Given the low usage high life expectancy of general aviation fleet that could be 24 hours a year for 100 years, or 240 hours a year for ten years. Of course Your mileage may vary.

Talked to Joe Logie at Champion/Slick yesterday. He said the same Todd posted, lots of parts no longer made and can't see anyone rebuilding it. He will give $250 core on a new OEM magneto. Just remove the gears.

As it turns out, the coil was the problem (after only 150 hours!). While the mag was on the bench, I had the distributor gear checked, and it was one of the suspect type in the SB, so it's being replaced (even though the tech said it was fine). Both mags were overhauled in Texas when the engine was overhauled in 2011, so the other mag will surely have the same distributor gear. A project for the right mag in the near future!
