Over the weekend 2 friends of mine in a 182 crashed on a glacier 5000 feet up a mountain in Alaska. Thank God one of them was smart enough to be carrying a Spot. The better one with text capability. He bought it last winter as he does a lot of ski flying the Adirondack mountains here in NY. They are alive only because of that devise. Instantaneous SOS with location, there literally was no search, only recovery. THANK YOU to the Alaska rescue teams, they are amazing. It took them 2 days to get to them due to weather but their determination got to them just in time before exposure took it's toll. They wagered with Alaskan weather and lost but thank God can live to tell about it. Thank God for PLTs. Anybody flying back country SHOULD be carrying one. This is the second time one of these has saved a friend of mines life.

Correction he had a Garmin inReach, but my other friend had a Spot

I followed Steve when he flew that supercub from Texas to Alaska, and he used Spider Tracks....I always thought that was a great tool for others to keep updated on your progress. Not sure if it has an SOS feature though.

I like Flightradar 24 but, backcountry coverage is almost nil. I used Spot in the past but, I really only needed it for summer travels.

I carry a personal emergency locator in the airplane all the time. Together with my survival vest.

Funny, I've been researching PLBs, y'all are helping me make up my mind that I need one!

I carry a Spot. It sits in a cradle on the instrument panel. Years ago I had to hike out about 7 miles with a broken wrist and fractured jaw. My Spot was sitting on my tool box. Yea, another dumb move on my part. Another tool like a 406 ELT with GPS capability.

An update on the story, nice to have a good ending. My friends are very lucky. We are sending a case of Scotch to the crew.
