Oil cooler connections
On a 1956 PA-22 with 150 HP, How are the fittings sealed coming directly out of the stock oil cooler? I know the stock oil tubes have O ring compression fittings. There are 90 degree fittings on each side of the cooler they appear to have pipe threads. I am not seeing Teflon tape. also not seeing any flange that would allow O ring to compress and seal

Re: Oil cooler connections
On my 56 the fittings are pipe threads going into the cooler. The 90 degree fittings connect to the tubes with a rubber compression fitting (sort of a sleeve) Univair has them

Re: Oil cooler connections
Thanks Guys this is exactly what it looked like to me. I put in new compression fitting I still have misty oil on the bottom of the motor. I think the 90 degree fittings into the cooler, The pipe thread is leaking

Re: Oil cooler connections
A good way I have found to isolate leaks like this is to tie a rag around the suspected fitting. A lot if time something will leak and with the airflow in the engine compartment make it look like other things are leaking. Can be very frustrating.

Re: Oil cooler connections
Fixed it this weekend. Plain old Teflon tape on the threads into the oil cooler and just for the heck of it a dab of RTV on the rubber gasket for the tube side. Let it set for a couple hours while farting around with other stuff. It works great does not leek, engine is clean and now the underside of my plane is clean as well

Re: Oil cooler connections
Teflon tape is not a common practice on aircraft oil, fuel and hydraulic fittings but glad you got it stopped.

Re: Oil cooler connections
the fittings coming out of the oil cooler are pipe thread and the other side of the fitting is some type of o ring seal. At any rate the threads coming immediately out of the cooler was the problem. But not any more, Its sealed and I am happy.

Re: Oil cooler connections
Old thread not directly applicable but here goes: Does Anyone have a source for the large brass gland nuts that hold the oil cooler to the brackets on each side? Mine are pretty beat up.
Thx,
Subsonic

Re: Oil cooler connections
I couldn't find a part number. I might have some that are in good condition.
