Default Cowling Vents Sea Plane Operation

Somewhere I read, it helps to have Cowling Vents for Seaplane Operation?? Anyone go in further detail and or has heard of it or done it. I know my Oil Temps on Hot day can hit 220. I heard by adding the vents it cools the engine drastically.

I think it is a pop-up vent in the top cowl in the centre strip between the two doors.

They are gills in the lower cowling - but you can improve cooling by 20 degrees by adding a radius piece of aluminum on the lower firewall to compliment the cooling lip and make a true venture of the exit area.

I thought the vents were required to be installed with the drawing specified in the TCDS?

I checked both prints for the PA22 as called out in the TCDS, drawings 14375 and 14450. No vents in the cowl. However there is a note for installing vents on the 22-160 only. In the past I did some research into the early pacers 115,125 and they had the vents in the cowl for the seaplane. The actual print for installing the vents is 12501, same print as called out in the note for the 22-160. During that research I found a supplier that has both vents ( 4 parts in total) in a new old stock condition. PM me if you want part numbers and the supplier information.

Saw a Clipper that was built as a seaplane. It had gills like a Husky. I seem to remember seeing the drawing on the CD.

on the drawing 12501 the clippers are located on the bottom cowl near the exhaust, and the 20 and 22 are located on the upper cowl.

That is it. For some reason I thought they were different but it was a long time ago.
