Re: Platinum Pacer Wings
I’ve flown three Pacers... none of them would track straight down the runway without liberal use of the rudder. This precipitated getting on the brakes when landing to get nearly stopped as soon as possible...
One however did taxi straight after I aligned the mains and re-rigged the airplane. For chits and giggles I landed it ONCE without touching the brakes...just one ping please...
I’m ready to taxi test it again. If it tracks straight from the get go I’m fly’n it.. will have to wait until I heal up and the drain bramaging effects of pain management have worn off......and today is a perfect day for it.... grumble grumble

yes sir. There have been landings where I have miles of beach to roll out and no brakes are needed, but 99.99% of the time I am on the brakes hard to stop short. Sometimes on a steep beach I might have to drag a brake a little on take off to keep from pivoting uphill until I have enough speed for the rudder to do its thing.

Were they original taildraggers or conversions? Years ago I asked that same question many times after I bought mine and nearly always received “converted PA22” as an answer. squirrelly Pacers were a mystery to me because I had only flown one Pacer (1950 PA20) and it tracked pretty straight. It had wide gear and 6-8.5 tires. I was pretty green so I don’t know that I ever landed anything without using brakes back then. The L4 gets landed without brake use pretty regular even in a crosswind or tailwind but the brakes weren’t working at all in it when I got checked out in it 8 years before I bought it. I fixed them since because they are nice to have for taxiing and short runways. I do land the Thorp without using brakes from time to time. It’s a little more exciting.

Platinum Pacer Wings
Two were PA22 conversions. Both had droop wing tips. Both were more difficult to land three point for my level of experience. The stall during flair was very abrupt. Now that I’ve flown mine I’ve discovered it has an abrupt stall during flare as well. The stock wings made it easy...stall was mushy if that makes sense. One thing I’m very pleased with is the snappiness of aileron roll rate didn’t change and the ailerons are way more effective in a crosswind... I had zero problems with a 10-15 knot crosswind other than the rebound because I haven’t found the sweet spot for three point landings. Switching to the soft Maule Oleo spring pack and decreasing the air pressure in those 26” Goodyear’s. 20 psi now...will drop to 12 psi.. should decrease the rebound...I hope.
Pleased with the rigging.. no heavy wing and didn’t have to hold any pressure to keep her straight and level....I think. Was a little bumpy.
Need to figure out why my EGT’s on my CGR-30P display show cold...like room temperature? Trigg radio doesn’t squelch and I have quiet audible feed back from the strobes. I used shielded wire on everything with the exception of the wing lights and the Ei instruments. May have to separate the wiring harness for the radio and the intercom?

Please remind me to never try to rebuild and modify an airplane. Mark, I stand in awe of your efforts and diligence. Thank you for all you've posted.

Re: Platinum Pacer Wings
Subsonic,
I hear you! We moved the Bearhawk fuselage back into the shop.. Every time I walk by it I’m looking at modifications I made. A couple are going away. One is a modified Cessna rudder pedal assembly.. the plans call for a rudder pedal assembly that’s not much different than the original Pacer set up. The other are these seats that I modified. They adjust up and down a couple inches or so and slide back and forth on rollers.. I still want to use the Mooney Acclaim carbon fiber cowl as a form to build a longer cowl for the Bearhawk.

Re: Platinum Pacer Wings
Still fishing Mark? Is your wife Eskimo? If so you have a fish wheel I hope. I had God parents in Fairbanks, kids are like a second family. They still are using theirs. I know you must be doing something important to keep you out of the sky with that prize aircraft.

Platinum Pacer Wings
Mr. Bill,
Nope salmon runs are done. Yes my wife is a Yup’ik Eskimo. I’m also a commercial salmon fisherman.. it’s real easy to put the net out to stock the freezer. Generally we stock the freezer with silver caught on a rod and reel.. way more fun!
Still battling the radio static problem...this time I think it’s the power supply to the Spidertracks unit on top of the panel.. that’s the only thing I’ve added since the problem cleared up...somehow?
Will tackle the radio tomorrow...
To answer your question,
Did flying some yesterday...needed to test out the original VSI I re-installed. The pretty one I had installed was pegging 2k and I know I wasn’t climbing or descending at that rate... spent the remainder of Saturday and today cleaning the basement.

Re: Platinum Pacer Wings
Cheap USB adapters use a chopper circuit to reduce 12v to 5v. They can create a lot of electrical noise.

Re: Platinum Pacer Wings
Wonder if Fluke makes a probe that measures electrical noise? I’m imagining something that works like a Freon sniffer...used to find a Freon leak...cept I’m looking for emission sources?
