Andy's tail post was broken all the way around... and his has the 1 inch spring with light Maule tail wheel...
I really believe it is a week point of the converted Pacers... every one I have ever taken apart has been cracked at that location... sleeve it with heavy wall material at least 6 inches long and weld on a new spring perch, it will give you an excuse to get the spring angle good for proper tail wheel caster also..

I was figuring to use an internal sleeve so I don't mess with the lower rudder hinge brackets. Drilling out the bottom of the spring perch may be the best way to insert the sleeve. I had hoped that the heavy spring would improve the caster angle. Tell Andy to keep his plane out of the cow pastures. Second thought, maybe that's my problem. Thanks Brian.
I found this crack because I left the tail post area uncovered and exposed.
Thanks Steve and Brian for the tips. I inserted a 7 inch liner tube today and roset welded it in place. I drilled a hole up through the tail bracket to insert the liner tube.
Anyone know why there is that short length of horizontal tube (approx. 1/4" ID) down by the cluster?
I have the same on my Vagabond and it doesn't appear to do anything!
Perhaps used during frame assembly?

Zinc Chromate (I don't remember the brand) I ware a good mask (at least now days I do). It does fine with the Stewart's glue. I don't think it's recommended because of its toxicity. Sometimes I use etching primer and top coat with enamel. Acid etch and two part epoxy maybe better but is quite the hassle.for small jobs. I have more welding coming up with the fuselage extension. My tubes had no external rust, I spray Corrosion X inside my fuselage on the tubes on a regular basis.
Might be another dumb question, but is just inserting a tube inside a legal fix? Why wouldn't you need to replace the broken tube with fish mouth joints before the inner tube is inserted? My Acceptable Methods book is on the missing list.

Thanks. The reason I ask is I'm repairing a fuselage (not a shortwing) and when done the owner wants a darker green for a military look. I think rand O plate is darker two part primer. I prefer poly fiber two part but it's a pale green in color.

The fuselage went around the factory on a rail and that small tube was part of the attachment.

I have always cut the tail spring fitting and done a diagonal cut but if you think about it Stephen's repair is stronger than original with the sleeve.
