ads-b gps antenna
Has anyone added their ads-b yet? just curious about the location and installation of their GPS antenna. How much ground plane is needed? Wing root or gas tank cover etc.
Thanks. The sfra is a great place to be in.
Thanks, John

Re: ads-b gps antenna
Hi John, good questions. I put the GPS antenna on the wing root fairing and added a ground wire to make sure.
the transponder style antenna does need a minimum ground plane- ask manufacturer - I think freeflight needed 8 inch X 10 inch but don’t quote me - 14 months have past. My memory is gone! There is a minimum distance of clearance from UAT antenna to Transponder antenna - also ask manufacture. Moe

What system did you use for your ADS-B setup?

Re: ads-b gps antenna
I installed the Freeflight FDL-978 . I looked up the installation instructions online, found they call for a minimum ground plane size of 5.25 inches square per side. I think mine was a bit bigger. Moe

Let us know how the antenna works out. I’am looking at the Garmin GLD-82. It suggests a 15” round ground plane.
Thats tough to do. Thinking since I have Airtech covering on my fuselage I may mount it inside on a ground plane. Airtech does not use silver to block the UV. The use an absorber. I presently have my gps and ADSB-in antenna mounted in the fuselage and they work great as does my ELT. The CAP can attest to that.

The stratus is a good system. It worked really well with the combination of foreflight. Attaching a pic with the antenna placed at the pilot side root.

Re: ads-b gps antenna
I did the Stratus and had a issue with a comm antenna being to close.
Apparel tech support was great, ended up using a comm/GPS antenna
On one side, the WAAS/GPS antenna on the other side.

Re: ads-b gps antenna
Dad just finished installing the GDL-82 in our TriPacer, with the antenna on the right wing root fairing, and our comm antenna is on the left one. I'll give a report once we get a chance to fly it for a bit and test it out. We won't be flying for awhile with the looks of the forecast and the ground right now.

Re: ads-b gps antenna
I assume that with the GDL-82 you use the Stratus for the "ADS-B In" part or are you just doing the required out only?
