    Default Hartzell Starters Quality

Has anyone had much experience with them? We installed the first one, to replace the original, 5 years ago. That lasted almost 2 years(~175 hours), and was fortunately replaced under warranty even though it was slightly past warranty period. The spring broke in it and the starter gear could be heard touching the ring gear while the engine was running. The replacement lasted around 3 years and a little over 200 hours. It now has an issue starting and kicks out after engaging and turning the prop about 90 degrees or so. It will eventually start the engine, but I ‘m thinking that isn’t a sure thing and I wouldn’t take it anywhere but around the local area as is.

The worst part is they’re completely non-repairable. They’re a discard and replace unit. Has anyone else been having trouble with the quality or have we just gotten two bad ones?

Cub Crafters Carbon Cus come with them and get replaced often. I know one with 400 hrs that has been changed once another with 386 hours and is on it's 3rd.

I have an ERZ-8012, happy with it, had it a couple years now and guessing 100 or so starts with no issues. Will have to google it and find out if others are having problems. I have not had a problem at all with mine.

The one on the Carbon Cubs is a lot smaller and the engines have move compression.

I talked to a hartzell tech and he thought it seemed like the clutch slipping and they would look at it under warranty.

Is there a reason I cant add an impulse coupling to the right magneto to avoid kickbacks when starting on both mags? I’ve had it kickback several times when starting on both, and have since made it a habit to start on left only, regardless of the temperature(the manual says only start on left when <40° OAT).

Only cost, you need the spacer and an impulse coupling mag. Work on a couple of Lycomings with 2 impulse coupling mags. Common on float planes.

What’s the legality of such a change? I know our IO-320B1A’s have two impulse coupled mags so I don’t see an issue with adding one.
