Default Approved engines for replacing O-320 A1A?

Beginning to look for a replacement engine for my 55 PA22-150.
The current (original) engine is an O-320 "no dash" equivalent to the A1A.
What other variants would be legal to install?
I have a lead on an A2B (-32 carb, straight iol riser) and need to know if it could be bolt in as far as legal is concerned.

    Thanks,
    GG

Well I just checked the TDCS and the O-320 -no suffix, -A1A, -A1B, -A2A, -A2B are all approved (with specified carburetors.)
    Never mind...

Yes...so those are the easy drop-in replacements. But the carburetor application chart shows different carbs applicable to some versus others of those models, so make sure you have a carb that matches the new engine.

I'd like to know, too. Are all the engines listed above a direct and legal replacement for the A1A? Or, the "no dash"? I'm assuming the carbs that came with each engine are also required. If that is a bad assumption, and all carbs are interchangeable to all engines, please advise.

Yes, they are listed on the Type Certificate Data Sheet. You can also reference the Lycoming O-320 TCDS to see the differences in the different models and there are ways to convert one model to another by simple changes.

The carburetor most likely is installation specific. Be sure you get one of the specific engine models with the carburetor listed. If the engine was installed in a different aircraft model, it may have a different carburetor.
