Need advice: ADS-B “in” receiver
My older Dual external GPS is, well, old, and I’m looking to upgrade.
I’m looking at options that will do GPS + ADS-B “in” like ForeFlight’s Sentry, the Dual options, etc. What’s everyone else using? They all seem to be about $500, and I know I can build a Stratux, but not really interested in messing around with that for now.
I do use more than just ForeFlight, so want something that might be compatible with other EFB apps.

Flight solutions flightbox. I’ve been running one with the dual-band remote mount antennas which allows me to hide the unit behind the panel with some 3m “dual lock”. Antennas are mounted on the V behind the windshield and are nearly invisible. WAAS antenna is mounted on the glare shield at the base of the V and is nearly invisible as well. It’s worked really well for me over the last couple of years but I just got a Stratus 3i for free with my new Stratus transponder so I’m pulling it out.

Hey Bender,
I have the same exact setup. Been using Flightbox with external WAAS GPS antenna velcro'd to the back hat shelf with a battery. The ADS-B in is feeding my iPad with iFly for a year or more. Works perfectly if you remember to plug the box into the battery before you leave. Just had installed Stratus 1090 ESG xpondr and it apparently has 3i, WAAS but I wouldn't know as I've still been WiFi'ng the Flightbox ADS-B input. Have you actually used your Stratus WAAS 3i to drive your tablet? Are you running Foreflight or something else? Your experience with the Status ADS-B IN? I moved from Foreflight to iFly because iFly VFR was as good or better and less than half the annual subscription price. I'd like to keep it but am wanting a no hassle start up and go capable system that I don't have to remember to plug in batteries and verify a good wifi connection as part of preflight. Last time I checked, the Stratus 3i (in) would only talk to a Forflight sw package. I hate to spend more $ for what is essentially the same capability as iFly, and iFly flight route planning tool is easier to use in my experience. As always, all comments appreciated.

Re: Need advice: ADS-B “in” receiver
I leave the flightbox plugged into a usb adapter all the time, so it turns on and off with the master switch. The 3i is normally a $500 add-on option to the Stratus esg, but I got an Oshkosh special that included it for free. The panel is torn apart now awaiting install, but I’ll report back when it’s ready.

Re: Need advice: ADS-B “in” receiver
I use a cheap stratux box for the gps and adsb-in and run FlyQ on an iPad mini. It does everything I need and more.

Re: Need advice: ADS-B “in” receiver
I use Garmin GDL 50 (ABOUT $700), paired with Garmin Pilot app. Portable is nice if you like to use in other airplane too. I know it pairs with Forflight and a couple others.

Re: Need advice: ADS-B “in” receiver
I went with the Stratus ESGi in my Tri-Pacer. I really needed a new transponder anyway so this seemed like the best solution.
The cost of the transponder, Stratus unit and installation was $4100. The first two missions I did after installation, VA62-KGON and VA62-KOSH, I would not have been comfortable doing without the weather and radar that is now displayed on ForeFlight. I’m very happy with it.

Re: Need advice: ADS-B “in” receiver
Nothing much to add here, I use Stratus with IPad or IPhone and it gives me what I need for the money.
i use ForeFlight software and get radar and traffic.

Re: Need advice: ADS-B “in” receiver
I just replaced my early ILevel adsb-in with their new Astro model, it is dual band frequency and WAAS gps. It works well with the IFly gps 7 inch dedicated ultra bright display. My back up gps is the IFly gps app installed on my 7 inch Android tablet. These are fast systems, track traffic air to air and provide weather and TFR's. I think both ILevel and IFly make good products and are dedicated to continual improvement.

Re: Need advice: ADS-B “in” receiver
I am really looking hard at the BOM. https://shop.levil.com/products/bom-with-adsb Its more money but the ease of use and not having to remember to plug in or turn anything on is appealing.
