Muffler AD

More research shows that the worksheet that accompanies the logbook also shows “complied with (AD) with the installation of a new muffler. And then to add to my confusion it then says, next inspection due at (100 hours hence.) Same IA for the next 4 annuals and each one references ad 65-10-01 (from memory, not sure if that’s exact,) as previously complied with with installation of new muffler. Due at (100) hours.

I guess my IA will figure it out in November but I need to check with him to make sure I don’t overfly the 50 hours as I’m just a few away and getting into my (busier) flying season here in So Cal.

Read the AD, up to 950 hours since new, the muffler is to be inspected each 100 hours. Once the muffler passes 950 hours, the inspection is due every 50 hours.

I would question if they actually complied with the AD at each annual. If you read the AD it requires seeing inside the muffler on both sides. The right side can be viewed through the tail pipe but the left side requires removing the exhaust pipe on that side. Although can of the muffler can be inspected on the outside for cracks by inspection and by opening up the heat muff the real problem is the the warping of the flame tubes, they crack and break off and stop up the tail pipe.

Steve, do most shortwingers also weld in the muffler bail? Also, can this be done as a logbook entry without an expensive 337 major repair? Thanks, kelliots

Based on Part 43 Appendix A, the way I read it if you need to weld something on the airframe (Exhaust is an airframe part), it is a major repair requiring a 337. If I recall, when I purchased the exhaust pipe for my PA-22 back in the 1980s, it came with the bale already welded in place.

I would use the Piper service document on the bale install and do via a logbook entry.

Bought a new one from AWI last year and it is technically "new". Didn't have to send them the old one to cut a piece off it. Fast service and a good price. Univair is out of their minds.
