PA-22 O-320 Oil Return Lines
Is there an acceptable alternative to the Lycoming-style multi-segment oil return lines from rocker cover to block?
I cannot eliminate a pesky oil drip from somewhere around the short rubber segments at the block. I have the thumb screw hose clamps snugged as far as I can get them without removing cowling and exhaust headers and/or chewing into the hoses.
Thank you.

I suspect you have a leak elsewhere, having had the same problem. Prop seal and cylinder base seeps come to mind.

Re: PA-22 O-320 Oil Return Lines
I just replaced all of the cork rocker cover gaskets with APS Silicone Rocker Cover Gaskets from A.E.R.O., and it seems to have solved a good portion of those pesky drips. I think some of the push rod shroud seals might still me seeping, but no more than a film on the case. The rocker covers leaking would drip down on all sorts of different items and it was very deceiving.

If the hoses on the drain back lines are old and brittle tightening will not help. I have also seen lots of rocker cover leaks but also the push rod tubes leak and the oil runs down from above which is not always obvious.

I'm planning on doing this at annual with those exact gaskets. Any other items required (like star washers, etc.) and what do you think of them?

Re: PA-22 O-320 Oil Return Lines
I have screws that have permanently attached star washers that came with the stainless covers from ECI.
I scraped the cork off, every bit of it, then used sandpaper to get the remaining specs, followed by MEK. I didn't want any remnants causing problems. Also, make sure you get the right torque for them because the silicone uses significantly less torque than factory specs with torque.

Thanks Zac, just what I needed.

You'll be pleased with them. Haven't had a drip yet in almost a year for the set of them.

Re: PA-22 O-320 Oil Return Lines
To build on what Steve said, before I purchased my TP, one of the things that was taken care of was to replace the rocker covers with the new silicone gaskets, and that took care of leaks there, very nicely-- but I still had persistent leaking from that general area.
Finally traced it to just what Steve described, old, brittle rubber return lines. And he was right, tightening did not sop it (though it did slow it down a bit).
Replaced those with new rubber lines --that were much thicker, BTW-- and they've remained dry ever since. I'd check those very carefully.
Only problem now is a very small leak that appears to be in the area of the joint between the crankcase and the bottom of the upper halves, toward the front-- but it's very small, just enough to keep things lubed up under there. It does not appear to be from the prop area. For the time being, I can live with it. (But still annoying!) Another "wunna these days…" projects.

If your old drain rubber tubes for brittle you might want to check the rest of the rubber parts on your engine especially the engine mount just a thought
